RIP Pro Controller 2 dpad

Glad I didn’t get one now

One YMMV thing about the D-Pad on the Switch Pro Controller (and apparently the Switch 2’s)

There’s two completely different ways that people often use D-Pads.

Some people are “rockers” and some people are “sliders”.

Rockers keep their thumb in the center and rock the D-Pad in all directions.

Sliders move their thumb across the D-Pad and press it on its edges as if they’re buttons.

Rockers usually have more of an issue with these D-Pads than sliders do.

Interesting classifications! Sounds like they could be classifications for Megaman fans or something lol

Sounds like I’m a Slider but I also can’t stand using the Pro Controller 1 dpad, though mine was more because of how mushy it felt, how much pressure it took to get an input, and for how inaccurate the dpad was, in that order.

Is this the wrong time to ask if someone wants to buy an essentially unused Switch Pro Controller 1 lol? I bought it as an insurance policy if my Lite’s sticks started drifting

They just… announced a Splatoon game on their phone app

My money is on it being a rougelike.

It’s funny how they added all these new movements, but the fastest way to race is simply to drive on the sharpest line of a turn. Sure, if there’s a boost or rail on a straightaway, take it. But on turns, barely anything beats sticking your nose right on the inside edge and drifting hard.

to be fair, it’s pretty vanishingly rare for any racing game to have mechanics so powerful that you can ignore the basic math of how to get from A to B the fastest. just thinking about how much additional distance needs to be travelled when taking a turn of any sharpness anywhere other than the absolute inside line means whatever mechanic needs to be balanced against this (e.g. boost pads) needs to be monumentally strong. too strong, really.

the only good example i can think of off the top of my head is in fossil canyon in diddy kong racing, you take a suboptimal line in the last turn because there are like 4 boost pads that basically exponentially affect your speed if you hit them just right and let off the gas for max boost.

racing lines are really important. you have to really go out of your way to make alternatives viable

in mario kart games, you have incredible turning power as well as very little speed loss when turning hard due to drifting being so powerful. that makes inside lines even more valuable, and that isn’t even getting into how the boost accumulation works

Or you can do this nonsense.

the dpad on the Pro 2 doesn’t feel very different, but i haven’t had to press as hard as i did with the Pro 1, where my inputs were often lost.

also i really like the way they handle assigning the back paddles - you open the Home menu and it temporarily saves the controls for that game while you’re playing it. this makes so much more sense then how Sony or MS have handled it, where you create a couple different profiles that then can be switched through. maybe it just makes more sense to me - i’d rather be able to try out different configurations without having to close the game and open a separate part of the console’s UI to change the controls.

found that my thumb was getting tired playing Mario Kart but i think that’s just a thing that happens when i play racing games and i’m pressing down too hard lol

very happy 8bitdo patched their Pro 2 model to work on switch 2, still one of my favorite controllers and works beautifully with mario kart world

also played a bit of f-zero gx on the NSO and it still whips every inch of that proverbial ass

Oh yeah, and here the tracks and tricks really seem balanced as a way to accommodate the 24-player races. They’re a way of making an inefficient line closer to the fastest speed.

A funny thing happened this evening. As I have slowly restrained myself from flipping on every jump and drifting on every turn, I’ve gotten much better. I also decided I want to win, so now I’m racing as Mario. As soon as I made the switch, I won first place in 4 150cc knockout rallies. I wish it were Rocky Wrench Kart, but it’s a Mario’s World.

I keep seeing people saying that they wish the Switch 2 had a mode that let you play Switch 1 games at an unstretched original resolution.

It would look like this

Can’t imagine that being a fun way to play

Splatoon streamer DUDE says the Switch 2 Pro controller gyro aim is much smoother. Sickos will have to buy it despite the d-pad. Oh hey it’s a little cheaper at Costco.
