Switch 2 (part 1)

Misleading graph obfuscates that around 80% of third party games havent been tested on switch 2 beyond ‘launches without crashing’. Also, the only ones where ‘issues are being addressed’ as opposed to identified are nintendo fitness boxing(“Planned to be resolved via Update”) and fortnite (“Switch 2 version is planned”) .

Makes me wonder how much we’re gonna get the sorta xbox generational leap where a bunch of stuff falls into semi-obscurity out of being perceived as not worth the effort or the cost by the rights/platform holder.

There continues to be so much bullshit misinfo about the Switch 2.

Grain of salt on this one, it’s one guy claiming it so far and he didn’t even prove it.

If I see this thing a week early I’ll lose my god damn mind. Salt will pour out my orrifices, I’ll throw my phone in the river and become one with the sea. I’ll start practicing rock eatting. I’ll learn how ducts work. I’ll put on a duck costume for insurance purposes.

Nintendo posted one of their Iwata Asks-style features at Ask the Developer Vol. 18: Mario Kart World — Part 1 - News - Nintendo Official Site. You lose some of the charm when it’s not the boss asking. I don’t even know who’s asking now.

Anyway, I’m taking the day off to play this.

The best bits of this are when they talk about how they made the food, how they all loved the food, how everyone worked hard to make all the food, how they went up to the mountain top and asked Tezuka about the food

“Does Mario, in fact, eat mushrooms?” (Laughs)

Jikumaru: So in the midst of development, we went up to Tezuka-san (8) and asked him to confirm, “Is Mario actually eating those mushrooms?”

(8) Takashi Tezuka. Executive Officer and Producer of the Planning & Development Division. Primarily involved in the development of 2D Mario games in the Super Mario Bros. series. Previously appeared in Ask the Developer Vol. 11, Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Yabuki: That’s right. And Tezuka-san answers, “Yeah, he is.”

Everyone: (Laughs)

So apparently it’s a lie.

There is a day 1 update but it doesn’t prevent you from playing Switch 2 games.

Switch 1 games need an internet connection for first launch for a compatibility check.

As the launch of the Switch 2 approaches, here are some reminders of some quirks of it that are confusing to many people. I wrote this for Reddit but I think that people here might find this useful too.

Upgrading from Switch 1 to Switch 2

The game save data on your Nintendo Switch 1 can be found only on the system hardware.

You cannot transfer your game saves to another system via MicroSD card. If you take the MicroSD card from your Switch and place it in another system, it will not be recognized.

The proper way to transfer files from one system to another is to do a System Transfer. Instructions on doing so can be found here. A system transfer requires both systems to be on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If you will not have access to both systems at the same time, you will need to upload a backup of your Switch 1 to Nintendo’s server for transfer. Instructions on how to do so can be found here.

You can also upload your save files to the cloud if you subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online. Some games do not support cloud saves. Here is a list of games that do not support cloud saves. Some noteworthy games that do not support cloud saves are:

  • The Pokémon series
  • Animal Crossing New Horizons (Requires a different process for backup outlined here)
  • Splatoon 2

To back up these games you will have to use either a system transfer or the server backup mentioned above. If you have already sold your Switch 1 without doing a server backup, your save data for the above games is already permanently gone.

MicroSD Express

The Switch 2 only supports MicroSD Express cards for game data, not MicroSD cards.

MicroSD Express cards are:

  • The same size and shape as MicroSD cards.
  • More expensive than MicroSD cards.
  • More widely available in smaller volumes.
  • Have more pins than MicroSD cards for faster data transfer.
  • They have this EX logo on them.

Do not confuse them with Sandisk’s similarly named line of “MicroSD Extreme” cards.

Japanese Switch 2

There is a Japanese Only version of the Switch 2 in Japan. It costs ¥49,980 (¥53,980 for the Mario Kart bundle).

The multi-language version costs ¥69,980 (¥73,980 for the Mario Kart bundle).

The Japanese language version is:

  • Limited to Japanese only for games and for the system UI. Some games may have an option to change language in-game, but for anything that requires changing the system language, only Japanese will be supported.
  • Limited to Japanese region accounts. You will not be able to sign in with an account from another region. You will not be able to purchase any games that are not available on the Japanese eShop. Physical games from out of region should work. The Japanese eShop only accepts Japanese credit cards and PayPal accounts.

Unless you understand Japanese and live in Japan it is highly recommended that you do not buy this model. You will not be able to purchase any digital games for it whatsoever, and it will be locked to Japanese only. Even though it’s significantly cheaper, it will not be worth your money.

I imagine a lot of people buying from scalpers in the future are going to find out that they have the Japanese version of the Switch 2.

That won’t be an issue though whenever hackers figure out how to open the system up (hope)

It’s not looking good right now! RUMOR: Hackers stymied in every attempt to hack Switch 2 | GoNintendo

Lol the source for that article is a neonazi on Twitter.

The system isn’t even out yet lol

I hope once some time goes by, people can get in there and figure it out :tarothink:

sad to say i’m hearing that to hack the Switch 2, one will need to draw magical circles, scry for hours, and then drip the blood of a beloved pet into a Game Key card (they’re empty for this reason)

Over under on Switch 2 emulation by end of year.

betting nintendo will make the yuzu takedown seem like small potatoes

Ultimately the most Nintendo’s lawyers can achieve here is to limit emulator devs to people based in a jurisdiction that DGAF about US/Japan-originating civil lawsuits. And there are quite a few of those.

So I think the biggest question around emulation is how long it will take to access the encryption keys to get a usable rip of games.

damn I just got a shipping confirmation from Nintendo after only getting a preorder invite like a week after they opened up so they are really getting these out on time after all

oh, Nintendo has had shipping labels ready for weeks, I’ve had a tracking number for a couple of weeks

I know the standard shipping option is UPS, if you login to their site or app with your address, you’ll see the shipping type is 2nd day air (which kind of makes the 20 dollar charge for next day a little insane though the shipping date they sent out on orders is/was tomorrow)
