It might just be because those were the years I was a teenager/young adult/whatever but the period from like 1997-2003 was probably my favorite so far. Millennium Fever was a real thing. Religious and non-religious people alike each had reasons for thinking real bad shit was about to go down. Jesus was coming back For Real This Time! Y2K was a computer bug that was going to start the apocalypse!
And then there were all the reasons to be optimistic about the future. Mainly centered around the fact that technology was accelerating and on the cusp of changing society in dramatic and unpredictable ways. The internet as we know it was still brand new and weird as hell.
It was a good time most of the time.

My friend got up on the roof to welcome in the new millennium, and was deeply disappointed that he didnât get to see planes raining from the sky because of Y2K

i think this is the main reason i have positive associations with the time, even if i was pretty young then and sort of going through hell socially. adolescence for me coincided with the rise of social media, which mostly inspired feelings of cynicism and cultural alienation

1998 was my eighth grade year (junior high) and I hated it for all the usual reasons someone might hate eighth grade but having to do that and also have everyone on social media would have probably been unbearable for me so in that sense I feel really fortunate to have made it through my schooling without that whole dynamic in the mix.

Iâm glad I graduated from high school before everybody had a cell phone and social media got big. I remember kids would come to school with these print-outs of wrestlers in the style of South Park characters which I thought was the dumbest shit, but in hindsight, somebody being like, âhey check out this south park shitâ is better than âhey, check out this person talking shit about you on facebook, and also this south park shitâ.

Pre-social media high school (not the one I went to but it was a lot like this one). I wish I had been smart enough to appreciate it while I was there. I never thought I would feel that way. I guess this is growing up middle age.

According to the game informer podcast this demo was going to be playable on the E3 show floor but since E3 is canceled they couldnât do that so we just have to check out the video presentation instead.

With everyone trying to do cloud streaming for years someone needs to start cloud streaming demos of new stuff during events. I thought this was something Google Stadia would have done at its reveal. Sure, a third of all people would have trouble getting controllers working with their browsers, but the novelty of almost being able to play a game while itâs being revealed if only you could get the website to load would be worth it.
