Captain Rainbow
the only reason I want one is for the validation but I feel like earthbound fandom is so far from the niche it used to be that it really doesnāt matter at all anymore, except it might be nice to have a format on which itās more convenient to play than an emulator or rickety old gba/ds lite.
I wonder if toby fox knows why it still hasnāt been localized
I would genuinely like more people to be able to play it, and itās very very rare that I feel that my level of access to something thatās doomed to never have wider appeal isnāt sufficient, but I agree that no official release would actually make me happy at this point ā the script we have is good and the process of playing it is deeply modest in its way.
what does toby fox know and when did he know it? a special investigative report.
I canāt fathom how contemporary NoA would localize magypsies to somehow excise the compound yikes inherent.
I do feel like it might be rejected as too nihilistic by younger people despite the core thesis holding strong.
all of nintendoās vc and switch online releases have had the usual emulator latency, so anyone thinking mother 3ās hypothetical official release would help on the rhythm front⦠probably not
emulation with runahead (or fpga if youāre nasty) is probably the answer
and I really donāt need to be blackpilled any further wrt how out of step I am with current tastes
Repro cart or cart with rewritable eeprom imo, thatās how I played it back in 2008.
While the translation we have may be better than whatever we could hope NoA could produce in 2020, I still think wider accessibility for it would be good. Yes, everyone emulates, but actually not everyone emulates.
I would like everyone to be able to play it but maybe not to personally have to hear about it
can we the day the clown cried this one, is that asking too much
geez I wouldāve been such a different person if I hadnāt come of age in the mid-2000s
tbh I have quite a bit of confidence that they could handle this better than the original fan translation, but it is tricky because I donāt really think you can really separate the problematic aspects from the basic narrative.
I just kind of feel like an explicit part of professional localization is to be sensitive about potentially offensive content exactly like this in a way that just isnāt present with fan translation
(not that nintendo has an ~amazing~ track record with this but Iād reckon they are better than any other major publisher simply by virtue of the enormous stick theyāve always had up their ass about never offending anyone ever about anything)
has anyone interviewed itoi about what the hell he was thinking with that part?
not that Iām aware of but tbh Iāve always thought that it would be extremely easy to redeem those characters with some minor edits to the sprite work to be less over the top and a couple scenes heavily scrubbed ā āmagical non-passing queersā actually seems like it should fit both the narrative and the audience, even though itās still a huge reach in a game that covers a lot of other territory and which is currently viewed as a outright detractor.
forgot about the older style flashcarts - gba ones are cheap as heck now too. you can get one for ~50 USD on amazon, and ez flash is a brand iāve used before and had good experiences with
though I guess itās also a few years past when people would be accepting of it as kitsch, even if itās thoughtful kitsch
thereās some bits here and there:
- As far as the characters go, the Magypsies are amazingly strange.
Itoi Yes, theyāre like mixed-up Chimeras. (laughs) A fusion of man and woman.
- Before I first encountered the Magypsies, I was told, āTheyāre neither man nor woman, nor are they human.ā That really left it up to my imagination as to what frightening creature I was about to come across. (laughs)
Itoi The real credit for that goes to the person who drew the art. (laughs)
- They really are some fantastic people.
Itoi Itās because the world in the game is so macho. The good guys in the game are strong and they fight. The same goes for the bad guys. So in other words, itās set up so that might equals right. āPower is Beautiful.ā And amid all of that, there are these non-men yet non-women people who have already gone so far as to accept their fate of death. If these characters really existed⦠I would want people who play MOTHER 3 not to act hostile towards them. I would want them to have fun together in a world they both share.
- I can really feel how much you respect the essence of the Magypsies.
Itoi I really do respect them. I have Magypsy friends of my own.
- I knew it! (laughs)
Itoi Itās to the point where Iāve been told how well I understand the Magyspy heart. (laughs) And how some players were especially moved to tears in the way the Magypsiesā sense of beauty differs from the sense of beauty most people adhere to.
- Only someone like you with such a wide variety of acquaintances couldāve created such a world. (laughs)
Itoi Iām not one of those people. But I really like them a lot. Enough that Iād want to be one myself. (laughs)
- (laughs)
Itoi Thereās a part where a Magypsy says, āFarewell!ā and then flutters away like a piece of paper. I really like how thereās a complete lack of weight⦠itās almost pitiable. (laughs)
One of Itoiās favorite scenes. Look how light that slowly fluttering form seems!
- Even though they live for over 10,000 years. (laughs) Speaking of which, when a Needle is pulled and a certain Magypsy begins to disappear, he says, āIām well.ā By any chance, is that from "Kikiās Delivery Service"5ā¦?
Itoi Yep. The staff tried to stop me when I wrote that. They said, āIf you werenāt Shigesato Itoi weād have stopped you.ā (laughs)
- Thereās quite a mysterious ring to the Magypsy names, like Ionia and Phrygia.
Itoi That was Shogo Sakaiās doing. Apparently theyāre special musical terms.
- Is that true for all of the Magypsies?
Itoi Even Mixolydia.
- Really?
Itoi Think of it as Mr. Sakaiās own play on words. Apparently, people who know a lot about music find that naming scheme intriguing.
it isnāt really my place to say, but to be clear Iām talking specifically about the scene where lucas discovers his magic powers by being partially drowned in the hot spring by the magypsies
I guess you could try to write it off as it fitting in with the same theme that your characters start sweating before learning a new ability, that growth comes with discomfort and pain, and itās just a coincidence that it happens to fit this extremely harmful stereotype about queer youths. although like⦠are these things ever coincidences lol? itās probably more likely that itoi had that in mind on some level and meant it in a patronizingly benign way.
and maybe you could just change that scene to be more like a baptism or something where they arenāt like forcing lucas to be submerged and kind of gently taunting him for it, though even that would involve editing the actual cutscene scripting not just the dialog which is generally beyond the ability of localization.
Itoi I really do respect them. I have Magypsy friends of my own.
hmm yeah this definitely fits the ābenign patronizingā mold
holy shit, this is so much worse.
Alright geeze I will playthrougb mother 3 again now that I am fluent.
When I played through it in 2007 it was a hilarious joke that I understood anything.
