You can see the exact opposite with shit like Navi and the boat in Wind Waker, where Japanese designers do everything possible to limit the player’s choices in order to ensure they make the correct decisions that had been planned for them.

Hmm, that’s an interesting comparison. Normally I process that as part of the worldwide trend to in-level explicit tutorials around that time, but Nintendo was more locked down than anyone and more path-optimized than anyone as well.

None of this is new discussion, of course. (I had a whole series of articles that… sorta traced these evolutionary paths, before I got burned out and stopped partway through.) But yeah, these frameworks sure do assert themselves.

You ever watch the “inside the video game” greenscreen portions of that old game show Nick Arcade? That’s what this game reminds me of. There’s a weird disconnect between input and action that I could never get past, and the gameplay is shallow as hell.

Do you want to use Jaleco IP’s for your game, events, or products?

City Connections owns the rights to the Jaleco catalogue.

Take a look at our collection.

whoever wastes money on 64th Street has my sword

kinda weird that they have Soldam on that list when City Connection themselves remade it and also you should buy it for your Switch

City Connection is the title they chose for their IP-holding-company? Does anyone like that game? Does anyone understand it?

it’s a Jaleco game, of course someone likes it

all Jaleco games are beautiful to someone

you can tell whoever compiled the list really cares since it has Bashi Bazook (unreleased in the US) and Chimera Beast (unreleased period and all that exists are like, 2 or 3 boards and the dump we thankfully have)

Yeah, I watched Nick Arcade pretty religiously (and got excited about that early Sonic 2 demo with the Star Light Zone music over the Emerald Hill Zone) until they had a segment where they asked a kid to list off the fruits in a picture and he said tomato—for which he got an obnoxious buzzer and a chastening because they said fruits, not vegetables.

About a tomato.

The kid was visibly baffled as well.

I never watched the show again.

ooh, what’s good about it? Is there any merit to the Famicom version, or is it all in the arcade port? Why is the jump and land animation so long?

City Connection is like burgertime and qbert had a baby

It feels like it would have made a rad Sega Card.

city connection has a strong aesthetic that i want to cover my entire body with but i cant remember the actual fuckin game for the life of me

its on switch though so im gonna try it out after this conversation. like i swear i thought city connection was just one of those ‘famicom box art’ projects that is just an artist drawing on a cartridge

Like I don’t think it is a good game (the completionism is busy work more than fun.). Iike the dream and mood of it and pondering how could I change this into a good game.

It is #2 after Qix of games I will try to make when I finally open up development software.

One of those it is not a good game but it is good.
