STUNLOCK THE PRESSES: combo breaking news (Part 1)

the most consistent opinion about skyward sword I’ve encountered is that would be kind of just okay if it wasn’t for the motion control stuff which is neat but not good enough to sustain the full length of the game

I’d really be interested in playing it with the motion controls removed, though I guess that might take considerable effort.

I had low expectations and enjoyed Twilight Princess on the Gamecube where God intended it to be played.

skyward sword is the best looking 3d zelda

Even though they could’ve been developed more, the motion controls were, for me, the only captivating thing about Skyward Sword. I will play anything that reminds me of Mazan: Flash of the Blade.

yeah I don’t have an opinion on them tbh, I liked the motion controls in twilight princess! really the only non-boring part of the game imo. but even there like, the game was so long and tedious that the motion controls eventually overstayed their welcome too.

believe in the power of MotionPlus

These ones are really where Zelda got far too long. Skyward Sword in particular felt extremely bloated and full of needless repetition. I feel like they all inherited Ocarina’s 2-part structure where the second part is the longer, more ‘epic’ quest to gather the pieces of thing to beat/seal evil.

Seems well within the range of what is feasible for today’s ROM hackers. Most of the motion controls will wind up connecting up to a binary yes/no result given to some routine, so you’d just need to find where that routine is in the ROM and connect it to a button instead. Maybe even easier, you could just have a macro at the emulator level that generates the right motion inputs without patching the ROM itself at all

In other words, the reason motion controls on the Wii wound up feeling kind of pointless and were quietly abandoned is the same reason it should be doable

Of course there still needs to be somebody with enough affection for Skyward Sword in the first place to put in the work

I actually researched emulating skyward sword recently and apparently it’s kiiiinda possible now that dolphin has some rudimentary motion plus emulation, people have found ways to map different remote gestures to buttons and it seems to work alright, just kind of a pain to set up. honestly hope that this listing is legit and we got a version that is basically the same thing but with nintendo level spit polish.

Thanks for the tip. I just assumed lowly forum software would never support that and never checked. I continue to be pleasantly surprised by how good Discourse is

I just linked one of my Yubikeys. My selectbutton account now has better login security than my checking account :upside_down_face:

that reminds me that avatar thumbnails have broken on user’s individual “activity” pages, if @villain or @toups want to take a look

The bit I played of Skyward Sword was impressive. It’s the only Zelda game you could honestly call “bloated” but I appreciated the attempt at telling a story on a greater scale with more attention to detail in the writing and commitment to establishing a Zelda world with far more stakes than is typical of those games. It’s the one Zelda that feels like a Final Fantasy game to me.

oh I could call a few zelda games bloated

Depends how you view it but my experience of the series is that each entry is sanded down to near perfection, Skyward Sword is the one that feels a little more ambitious than the others. I gravitate towards that sort of thing.

this is what ajutla said more or less and I trust his opinion implicitly tbh

tbh literally every zelda game since link’s awakening is bloated in one way or another, except maybe botw which if anything is too stripped down for its own good. but I think what they mean is that skyward sword is bloated in terms of plot/stories/characters/etc., which I think is fair to say in comparison to literally any other mainline zelda game.

I mean, yes, but the bloat is the best part of link’s awakening

edit – hey! come on!

I’m glad that I can still see it and at least pretend there’s some continuity

tbh since I watched that dumb “zelda facts” video from did you know gaming I’ve become convinced that link’s awakening is single handedly responsible for any and all good parts that remain in subsequent zelda games and if that involves adding some bloat then so be it
