STUNLOCK THE PRESSES: combo breaking news (Part 1)

reading this is reminding me that Microsoft touting the new xbox’s inability to downclock its CPU is such pure dumb PC guy thinking

I hope it also displays a percentage of unused ram monitor on the screen at all times

I skimmed this article but it seems really weird to me. This is the second article they put out; the previous one was released right after the GDC talk. This article says it has new details while also being based on an interview they had with Cerny, but that the interview took place days before the GDC talk would come out. So what was that other article they put out? Clearly they had all this information at that time so how is this new for them? Why wasn’t this context used in the first article? Also half the article seems like it’s quoting Cerny from the GDC talk and another half is quoting from whatever interview they did and it’s very confusing telling what quote is from what. A lot of it feels like it’s just restating the GDC talk, which is what the first article did but in different words.

It just struck me as kind of an odd series of articles. And nowhere has anyone asked MS or Sony if the new consoles will have editions with transparent windows with RGB internals.

I’m guessing there was some weird embargo from Sony because yeah this seems like something that should have come out at the same time as the other article/video.

I think this next generation Microsoft is going to extend the lead they have on Sony. At this point the only thing that excites me about PlayStation are some of the Japanese exclusives.

I mean, globally the PS4 has about twice the sales of the Xbone, so hmmm.

Yeah, I don’t know if they can “extend the lead they have on Sony” when I don’t know that they have the lead in the first place, but I think Microsoft has done a great job re-orienting themselves to do really well with their next console. In that sense, I’ve actually been more interested in learning about the PS5. We’ve known the central tenants of MS’s plans with next gen (Game Pass, cloud gaming, getting the strongest hardware) because they’ve needed to talk about it all to get people pumped for their next console after the Xbone stumbled, and I’m sure they have some great stuff for the console OS that’s yet to be revealed. But there has been very little information on just what the concept for the PS5 generation is supposed to be. MS as a company seems more capable of making broad, transformative initiatives than SCE but hopefully Sony has some sort of vision for doing something new.

At this point I guess we know the PS5 has some new controller functions (triggers with resistance, some sort of special haptic feedback?). And that’s nice- I like new controllers because it allows for new interactions, or can emphasize different interactions based on the button layout. I feel like an outlier on this but I thought PS4/Xbone were very boring in this regard. Sony did introduce the touchpad but while it being exclusive to one console meant third parties didn’t really do anything with it I don’t think we saw a ton of interesting use out of it from first parties either. Only a few games even used swipes as menu shortcuts.

But I don’t know if anything else has leaked so far about the actual end user experience for the Sony. Surround sound virtualization isn’t new for headphone users and their goal of developing it for regular speakers sounds like an idea they’re going to be working on through the generation rather than a central feature at release. I think lots of sound bars actually advertise they can do it but they have the problems even Cerny mentioned, so this sounds more like a dream Sony will explore than anything to concretely look forward to. There’s the super fast SSD, though that’s something both consoles have and I wouldn’t know if that the apparent gulf in SSD speed between the consoles means anything for any games outside first party stuff.

Edit: Oh right, hopefully PSVR2 offers some great improvements.

Could give a fuck about sales.

Just off the top of my head you can play old 360 games in 4k at 60 fps

Gamepass is legitimately a great deal

Adaptive controllers
Elite Controllers

4K Blu-ray drive

live is more stable

Better CPU and GPU

It’s not necessarily Sony’s fault, MS has deeper pockets and better talent at their disposal. PS has better exclusives tho

Oh from a personal view, sure that is what matters. Unfortunately, literally the only thing that matters to both MS and Sony is sales, so I can guarantee you MS is not thinking in terms of “extending their lead” because in their minds, they have fallen back into third place.

this is marginal, the main reason a seemingly marginal advantage worked out so well for the PS4 is because it had a 1080p temporal AA framebuffer and the bone didn’t

Doesn’t the PS5 have this? for the handful of people still buying blu-rays?

a pure luxury, as nice as they are, and we haven’t seen the PS5 controller yet

???

it’s a bunch of indies that have also been made free on every other giveaway service, plus microsoft’s current-gen internal efforts which are 80% terrible, and the package manager barely works

I appreciate their commitment to emulation but it’s never going to be anywhere close to an open platform in this respect and also they’re 360 games lol

these are good though

yeah i don’t really get the appeal of xbox at the moment because while i actively dislike sony’s first party stuff microsoft’s proposition of e.g 343 authored lifestyle halo gives me the chills and even fuckin’ steam has dragon quest & saga scarlet grace so i’m not sure what the deal is with the complete lack of japanese games

Gamepass on an Xbone is leagues ahead of its W10 counterpart as its just an extension of the store interface (MS has had a working implementation of such a concept since they’ve supported EA Access from console for 3-4 years)

not touching the library thing since that’s like, your opinion man but Xbone usually gets a wider selection than Windows

main thing that matters right now is that MS has shown a working box and Sony has shown a GDC talk, seeing as next to no next-gen games have been announced

hey I’ll have you know the Xbone just got Yakuza 0, an entirely new game that no one has played on other platforms

I should watch a longplay of Crimson Dragon.

In terms of total sales Sony would be “winning” but at the business end consoles are always sold at a loss so it always comes down to software and other services. This is why Microsoft is emphasizing the Xbox as a service platform (and Windows overall as well). They’re not going to outsell Sony in hardware they’re just going to try to make as much money selling subscriptions.

Sony is kind of the only big game company still operating in the older way of doing things. Getting as big a user base as possible and emphasizing their exclusive first party stuff as much as possible. It would be nice to see them turn PSNow into a Gamepass equivalent but apparently they don’t really need to do that like Microsoft does so they won’t.

From a purely end user perspective I think each of the big three have enough unique things to offer that they’re all still relevant and worth paying attention to and likely will be for the foreseeable future. If they could all just figure out a way to make all of their third party offerings completely integrated so the end user experience was the same across all three platforms and not siloed off then they could really focus on differentiating themselves on their first party front because everyone wants to play CoD with their friends but almost no one wants to have to own more than one game box thing to be able to do it.

I will say I find myself compelled by Microsoft’s vision for the first time since I had a 360. I’m lukewarm on PS5 so far although the controller haptic triggers seem cool and possibly having very accessible VR would be a nice bonus.

Idk I’m probably just going to either buy a Switch or never buy a dedicated gaming device ever again anyway

oh yeah at the same time I can’t imagine what would realistically excite a person about a PS5 at this juncture

almost all exciting games are Indies that I start thinking about maybe six months out from their release (and then typically forget about until the six week mark anyway). I got a PS4 earlier than I expected to because I didn’t have a computer that was like a half-generation ahead at the time like I do now, because the console was remarkably well scoped, and because Sony’s publishing was really great in the late PS3 and early PS4 days. I’d be surprised if they don’t sell me a PS5 eventually, but this is not an intrinsically exciting generation.

yeah it’s not great, TLOU was basically the end of it really working for them and it’s just TV soup now.

(God of War was actually pretty good after all under my reading though)

Hohokum and Dreams and Until Dawn and Tricky Towers and Bloodborne and Yakuza 0 and Polybius and RE7 and Galak-Z and Astro Bot and Wipeout and Automata and AC7 and The Witness though. they did good this go round!

Weirdly those are almost all Japanese and British devs, Sony’s dedicated talent pool in the UK is frequently overlooked
