STUNLOCK THE PRESSES: combo breaking news (Part 1)

This is a weird choice of ports!

There was a brief span where the whole Windows thing Sega had going inspired everyone to port very-late 1990s PC games to the Dreamcast with atrocious framerates because it cost nothing to do.

Would not have been surprised to see, like, Fallout 2 on there. Grim Fandango.

You know, I bet this is a big part of Sega’s latter partnership with Microsoft for a Dreamcast successor that, much like the Nintendo PlayStation, delivered us the original Xbox.

Microsoft was looking to move into consoles for a while, I think the top-level viewed this as similar to the ‘home entertainment’ versions of Windows and things like the MSN TV

On the other hand, the people pitching the Xbox viewed it very narrowly as a games console, a smart play because they had enough to focus on competing with Sony. We saw how that focus broke and lead to disaster when the original team shuffled out, claiming victory, midway through the 360’s life.

It is neat, though, that these proprietary what might be considered garbage titles aren’t just being left to rot on old technology. Like all these Java flip-phone games and what-have-you.

The Switch seems like a bizarre place to put them, but I think they should go somewhere.

Gunsport is actually coming out— as a Stadia timed exclusive. Who the heck saw that coming?

the conversation in the trash-action thread has turned to the deeply awkward late-00s period when the empty shells of big japanese publishers were doing late-follow Gears of War projects like Quantum Theory

I guess we’re deep into Souls heading to the west

Although here it’s consistently bottom-up, from tiny-budget clones like Salt & Sanctuary and now this, which looks like a mid-sized studio punching above their weight; western publishers are not hollowed-out in the way japanese publishers were back then, they’re too invested in chasing Witcher 3 and Destiny to build single-player games right now

The Xbox was also intended to be backwards-compatible with the Dreamcast. And the original controller is obviously modeled after Sega’s. It was gonna be this whole thing.

I can just see the connecting dots on Sega’s end, leading them to that ultimately failed partnership.

I remember hearing that story but it doesn’t track with what I heard from people on the Microsoft side, I wonder how far that got.
