It’s especially wild considering this fucking thing has existed for like 5 years or more:
(A spreadsheet with a bevy of translations for common game terms, especially those found in UI and menus)
Fwiw, I’ve definitely seen the first (続ける for continue, though just “continue” in katakana or English are far more common) and the fourth (設定 for settings) used before. But those middle two look so jarringly out of place, it’s wild.
EDIT: Okay, Rudie beat me to the second half of my post, but I’m leaving it.
man!!! white dudes wrapping their products up in their fantasy of japanese culture (because people like japan) who are not even willing to put in like a bit of leg work to involve actual japanese people in the process…just like…cmon…
riffing off rudie’s post i just imagine the pitch being like “bro…check it…infamous but like…samurai…”
i know i’m being disrespectful to these devs but i feel disrespected by the devs so
tsushima apparently was attacked as part of one of the unsuccessful mongol invasions of japan in the 13th century. the army probably included a not insignificant number of soldiers from korea–a game in which a noble samurai defends japanese territory from an invasion of koreans is like such a batshit insane idea for a game i don’t think even the most fascist of japanese ultraconservatives would come up with it in this day and age though lol
Yeah, I see, but budget would have not been a factor in any decisions around localization like this. If it is machine translated than a human being paid to translate it did it that way and no editor caught it.
A game this size probably has 2-3 translators per language with an editor for each, not to mention the voice recording staff that will be working with this translation, another 3-5 people per language.
Tsushima seems so far from “mainland” Japan that you can’t even say it’s invading Japan. You just invaded Tsushima. The idea of this game also probably appealing to some idea of patriotism or national identity boggles my mind. Ask 13th century Corsicans if they were French.
I’m not arguing with your post at all btw I am just baffled and mad at the AAA samurai game based off real history.
but isn’t it a common trope among white-supremacists in euro-america that there exists a continuous lineage from, say, greek philosophers to (east-and-west) roman generals to germanic tribes to vikings etc etc and that this bizarre “lineage” is what “western civilization” is all about
like, why wouldn’t a similar thing happen among japanese conservatives, specially considering recent history of colonialism.
i don’t think it matters that much, i’m also surprised they went for a historical game and stuff and i would like to play it someday idk. not trying to think too hard about it (i don’t even know the developer studio haha), but would like to comment on that
