STUNLOCK THE PRESSES: combo breaking news (Part 1)

What I’ve heard is that they modified the distribution bonus pool ($100m+ in a year – for <150 games!) to incentivize retention (weighting users over a month or more above downloads).

we want to charge a subscription fee for a bundle of games so that developers don’t feel compelled to create garbage gacha games designed to suck players dry over many months

jk lol plz make gacha games

they’re not making gacha games though, they’re making the level-based puzzle games that were popular in 2008-2010 and went extinct because of gacha games

I already thought the Japanese VA was really off from chanbara films.

Gonna need more of an explanation here, I’m just a gaijin. Although I assume it’s something stupid to native speakers, like the Cyberpunk twins.

they’re kind of weird translations you don’t usually see jp games use, which suggests they were cutting some corners (eg machine translating)

I imagine it’s like seeing:

Start the Story Mode
Load the Game
Save the Game
View the Options

Technically correct but unnatural

It’s even weirder than that. A lot of Japanese games would just use english for these, or katakana of English.

  • I think the first one is supposed to be Continue, but I have no idea what it says in Japanese. But literally, most games would just say CONTINUE or the equivalent in katakana.
  • The second one is where things get WILD. Most games would just say LOAD, ロード (again, just “load”), or ロード ゲー ム (load game). Instead, this says ゲー ムをロード, which sorta makes a weird sentence, because the order and added article imply that Game is the direct object of Load, which is then a verb, so it kinda maybe says “I load a game” which is…weird.
  • The third one is the TRUE WILD TIMES, because instead of NEW GAME, or ニューゲーム (literally, New Game), we get “Atarashii Game”. Atarashii does mean new, in a sense, but more in the sense of “buying a brand new thing still in shrink wrap”, which is a very different sense than “start the game from the beginning”. I saw one person on Twitter joke that this option makes it sound like you would get a refund and purchase a new copy of the game.
  • No idea on the fourth one.

Thanks, @Rudie for most of the explanation, as well as Google.

So yeah, super into Japan culture, this game. And:

100%, which doesn’t square up with how they’ve kept saying they were super respectful of Japan in all this, ha.

Would it really be that expensive to hire proper localisation/culturalisation staff to address this? I guess text translations at the level of menus are cheaper to do automatically but it leaves a pretty obvious paper trail.

To be honest the way the word ‘samurai’ is hit in all of their trailers so far hits that guttural edge reserved only for parody.

Additionally super weird considering this is Sony first party. You could ask literally anyone from the Japan offices in a single email.

The story they’ve been telling people is that they did just that. This menu indicates otherwise.

we’ve heard your complaints about the title screen and have made some changes that we think you’ll all like while also still being respectful of the Japanese culture.

and here’s how it’d look if it were actually developed in Japan.

That I have 5 free minutes The first one tsutsukeru does mean Continue just uh…really racking my brain if I’ve seen any japanese game use it.

The final one settei is frequently OPTIONS in some Japanese games.

Hey Booji we should have done a 15 minute cast on reading the wikipedia page of Tsushima. Also everyone should load up Tsushima in google maps and stare at it for 20 minutes considering world history.

Also the actual history of the island (and topography) is so much wilder than “what if the mongols invaded? But like what if bro.”

Just like the language history has to be unique and fascinating.

Something about this feels extremely on brand for this game.
