Streets of Rage 4

hit effects are the most important graphics, as this is a game about hitting

these are pretty boring hit effects

Beat’em’ups are games about fighters and the humans are the most important graphics.

but it’s not about bodies standing in place like statuary, or about bodies moving or jumping or talking, it’s about bodies in violent physical contact. And while the experience of looking at a screen is somewhat analogous to the experience of looking at people and the alleyways and pool halls they hang out in, the experience of an arm travelling at speed and making meaty contact, of a bat hitting a ball, of force and it equal and opposing force, is ill-suited to communicate across screens and needs help! while it is simultaneously the micro-climax the entire experience is built around. Loud noise and loud FX work and camera shake and hit stop and rumble and HD rumble all need to be present, loud, and assertive because they’re the weakest metaphors to communicate the most important thing.

If someone gives you a long thoughtful response don’t dismiss it.

I apologize for offhandedly dismissing your opinion.

No problem, I think you’ve got interesting things to say and I appreciate that you’re picking apart media.

something something video games are audiovisual experiences and need to use every trick possible to relay feedback to the player since they cannot physically affect the player 99% of the time

I don’t think a lot of people are going to stan Art of Fighting or Violence Fight but everyone fucking remembers the meaty as fuck hitsounds in AoF and seeing shit like GOGOON pop up in VF

I know for a fact no one in this thread will stand up for WoW but the sound design in that game is a goddamn masterclass in giving the player immediate feedback in what is ultimately a crude graphical representation of dice rolling madly

games feel good to play when they can make you feel what’s going on is actually happening

I like the screen shake but those hitsounds need more bass and maybe better mixing and maybe give the hitstop an extra frame to linger so I can savor it

Streets of Rage 4 will make its way on to PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch for $24.99!

See our new action-packed gameplay trailer which also reveals some of Streets of Rage 4’s tributes to the original trilogy, including unlockable pixel art characters with movesets and abilities unique to their respective games; Streets of Rage’s fighters can call the cops for their special moves, while Streets of Rage 3’s characters can sprint and roll through environments. Catch Skate, Max, and all the throwback warriors making their glorious return!

These retro characters combine with Streets of Rage 4’s five hand-animated leading fighters to bring the total playable roster’s count to 17. For a full nostalgic trip, players can also switch to the series iconic original soundtrack, handing out beatdowns backed by tracks from Streets of Rage 1 and Streets of Rage 2. Taking down thugs with these timeless songs cranked up makes for an incredibly satisfying retro experience.
