Street Fight Money V

The few times I’ve tried survival hard I’ve gotten to about the mid 30s before being overrun. Success seems mostly to come from keeping your health high, buying those defense ups and thinking of it like high level arcade mode ie: look for the dumb holes in the AI and run as fast as you can through them. Bison likes to scissor kick any movement at mid range, so jab and have a 4 frame punish ready. Any time they walk up after a knockdown they’re not going to block a wakeup dp, that sort of thing. Alternately, you can apparently just mp dragon punch with Ken for 40 minutes.

After years of worrying about the slightest hole in any block string and backing off after knocking him down, I find it strange that 'gief is not the grappler I fear the most in this game, at least for now.

I am seriously questioning my choice to leave my heavy Happ-style stick in the US, not even sending it over with my catch-all freight :(

I thought the choice of theme music was surprising but respectable:

Oops! Posted DJ’s new theme. Meant to post

Another shout out to the bad music: it’s aggressively boring, like they’d done 50-odd tracks (either new original or new compositions) and tried to make them all sound as similar as possible. I suppose FANG’s is alright, but it definitely loses out when other tracks so similarly positioned. It should have been abrasive as fuck in parts, but instead it’s as grey as some of the backgrounds can be.

EDIT: CFN name is FullCommunism

My CFN is bcnicoll.

Agree that the game looks and sounds pretty terrible on the whole, but I do like some of the sound effects. Blocked attacks in particular have a really nice weighty, crunchy sound.

I’m digging dhalsim’s iteration this time around - his close-range footsies are actually pretty solid, so he’s not only restricted to zoning/surprise mix-ups like in sf4. Also his v-skill and v-trigger are useful for ambiguous set-ups and mobility.

Like others I’m hitting a roadblock at 1000LP. And I’m having the same issues with 5 that I had with 4.

Mainly I just freak the fuck out when I’m playing online. In training I can land complex combos consistently, but something about the pressure of ranked mode just makes me lose focus and go nuts pressing buttons. In casual mode I tend to have a better win record, so it might have something to do with the pressure of ranked.

I also tend to wait too long for people to make their moves before I make my own. So I’m often moving backwards and anti-airing as a result - which is a good thing to practice and incorporate in my game - but sometimes I feel like I’m just being a doormat, waiting for people to jump or do whatever, and not thinking about how I can assert myself and set up some combos. Also, for a 'sim player, I can be pretty immobile.

Improvisation is also a big thing I need to address. I tend to rely on the same combos and set-ups, rather than reading the situation and responding with something creative.

Dhalsim things:

  • Good technique to get into for Dhalsim is to try and slide under crossovers if you’re waking up, so as to escape and confound your opponent
  • He’s probably the worst in the game for wake-ups, as even his teleport can be interrupted after you’ve completed the motion to start doing it
  • If you find yourself jumping back as the opponent is jumping forward (into you), you’re better off doing a mid-punch than a teleport or v-skill hover, because of its weird range
  • A good attack to start a round/match with is a standing mid punch or kick (kick is quicker), due to the range and relative speed of initiation
  • The Yoga Fire can stop most rush moves, but not Necalli’s bullshit for some unknown reason

dhalsim tips: if you can’t instant air TP 100% of the time don’t play dhalsim

PC Mods are taking off, haha

Kind of incredible how it took some ass-slaps and winking to make the main character of a 28 year old videogame series get a personality

well the whole point of ryu is that he doesn’t have a personality

Ooh yeah, the slide under crossover is a nice tip - definitely gonna start using it.

His lack of wake-up options/a dp is something I’m getting used to, and it’s teaching me to be more patient and defensive on knockdown. But by the same token, I don’t feel that steadfast defence is a great option for dhalsim in those circumstances either, since the opponent can just mix in a throw and punish you for being too defensive. So either you try to intervene in the opponent’s onslaught and get crush-countered for doing so, or you get thrown because you weren’t able to anticipate the opponent’s advance in .1 seconds.

I remember filipino champ saying (somewhere) that if you’re gonna play 'sim effectively, you need to make perfect decisions all the time. Okay decisions won’t cut it. I guess that speaks to the above issues and, more generally, the target audience for sfv.

Any tips on the sim/nash matchup? Really struggling with that one - I think it’s my worst character matchup. I also find nash the most unappealing character in the game, aesthetically, mechanically. Just super boring to play against.

really wish they had done cooler and weirder things with the “like street fighter, only everyone is now old” concept

Capcom bizarrely decided that the Street Fighter III series (which takes places in the late 90’s) happens after Street Fighter V. So the game where a guy has a wind jetpack and a smartphone that allows him to use twitter actually happens in 1995. Maybe Street Fighter VI will finally commit to old characters and drastically different play-styles in an SNK-like fashion. Probably not though.

Have to say V feels like a huge improvement over 4. Curious to see how things shake out once the ‘rest of the game’ comes out this month. But I’m legit looking forward to it. It’s a good time right now. But I assume it will be a barren wasteland to play 2 months from now.

Why?

If it were any other anime fighter you’d be right but street fighter 4 had a pretty healthy online population through its whole life time.
