Here we go. Last two before the final four.
so
steven isn’t a bowie fan, huh
This show is going to really unique emotionally resonant places. it’s fucking me up i wish it would stop
The only thing about Steven shattering Jasper that surprises me is that we didn’t get indications that he’s been quietly going to her for months now, to vent. He was always going to go too far, and there was really only one direction that anger would be permissible to go, that had been established.
We sure as heck did get an indication that being treated like an adult causes Steven to present as one. Much as being unloaded on the CGs at age eight caused him to… remain eight years old for the next eight years of his life.
I find the Greg episode quietly way more upsetting. There’s so much going on there, and so little of it is stated.
the realization that your guardians are not actually perfectly formed beings, and are uncertain goobers just like you but older, is such a specific yet Universal feeling that OG SU played in from the beginning. That Greg episode just hammered it home
It’s remarkable that Greg lasted 175 episodes before the glow rubbed off. Maybe in part because he made himself so scarce. And kept nearly as many secrets as Rose. Albeit, slightly less exotic ones.
The fact that he took his name from someone else’s song… there’s a lot in that.
…
Anyway,

ALSO, LOOK, I JUST DON’T GET DAVID BOWIE. And not for lack of effort. I’ve brute-forced nearly everything he’s written over and over, for 25 years, trying to crack the code.
His '90s stuff is okay. And I kinda like the album that came out the day he died. But every time someone plays one of his songs and gets all Greg about it, I respond more or less exactly like Steven.
Steven Universe Future kicks so much ass lol i keep wanting to make jokes about the crewniverse stealing my fanfiction and trying to pass it off as a new show, but… it’s a series devoted to exploring the emotional fallout of a silly/melodramatic kids show. Largely made by people who did not work on the original show. And people who get that kind of fanfiction, and might have even written some themselves. It is such a unique project
SU/F and OK KO are basically me screaming “MY PEOPLE GOT ON SCREEN!!” and that their creators are a couple is just , fuckin dodo video animal friendships ukulele music adorable
Yeah, we’ve only got a few active boarders who date way back. Most of the rest go back only as far as season five, if that. Some of them were active fans of the show before they joined.
…
So, those hexagons are Steven’s shield power, stripped of Rose’s custom skin he had inherited as a default. I had said something a while ago about how it seemed nigh time for him to drop her decorations. Didn’t quite mean like this, of course…
I do also love that Steven became Older Teen Steven for a brief moment and then reverted back, and they didn’t bother to explain it. if you’ve been following this show at all the semiotics make perfect sense. Also this is a kids cartoon show made by people who probably know what “semiotics” mean and that rules
They have probably even read Doctor Who: The Unfolding Text.
But yes, in interviews right around the show’s debut back in 2013, Sugar did some interviews where she went into some detail on the symbolism she buried in the show. The stars are a late addition that harks back to Ishtar, and so on.
Just for reference, the finale trailer.
these episodes very much matched the emotional throughline well but it feels weird to me that after that huge specific breakthrough with dr maheswaran there is no mention of therapy at all in these two episodes
Hey remember a couple episodes ago when Steven and Peri were all guffawing about Jasmine burying a body in the woods?
Steven is so proud to look like his dad.

The coolest guy in the world.

The man with all the answers.

His hero.

Neat little interview about Jasper
Also the first of the 4 finale eps is on the app (and in chunks on youtube as of yesterday, probably other sources too). It’s good! I will withhold further comments until Friday
What’s interesting here is, Lars. From the start of the show, Steven spent a weird amount of time around him. More than justified by how close the Big Donut was. Like, why did he invest so much in that jerk? Later he clarified that due to the negativity Lars was the only person he felt was honest with him. So he respected and valued that, in this situation where everyone ignored and lied to him on some level, or, he felt, expected him to be someone else. Lars was his anchor to reality.
And look what happened there.
First, Steven indirectly got Lars killed. Then he bought Lars back, more compliant and all bowing to him and stuff. Which just happened again. Second, when that anchor took off… that’s really what set Steven into his current spiral. He had been treading water, successfully avoiding his problems, more or less, until he lost that chunk of reality.
So… Now in desperation he found a replacement. Jasper is the new Lars, and boy does she make a person appreciate Lars in every way. Ultimately she is even a quicker disappointment, as after he kills her too, this time directly if inadvertently, she just rolls over and will never be real with him again.
