i think star wars fans maybe more than any other big franchise are just like haters by definition at this point, i try really hard to buck the trend but they’re making it almost impossible. i will say the costumes in this are pretty good so far.
the framing and blocking are painstaking lucas pastiche and specifically prequel lucas pastiche. absolutely none of the storyboarded feel exemplary animation directors bring over
there’s a sequence straight out of star trek 09 that feels totally flat here. just bored out of my skull when it’s telling me something cool is happening
it’s perversely fascinating to see someone who appears to sincerely believe every word lucas ever said about the prequels turning their own work in animation into reverent live action
expressive rigs and faces replaced by disengaged actors pacing around a sound stage
the dialogue takes these languid pauses like it’s loading the next shot in the cutscene
it’s so weird to see with this budget
i wonder what filoni thinks of andor
yeah this is the thing that is so hard to explain or describe effectively. it is so consistent across all characters that it can’t just be an acting thing, and many of these actors are not bad in other stuff. there’s this rhythm of “line” (pause) (actor creates facial expression of some kind) “next line” (repeat)
sora,
donald,
goofy,
it does feel very video gamey. there are also these moments when the characters are solving environmental puzzles (really) where it looks like they are stuck in a sort of animation loop waiting for the player to make the next input. Like just standing there with a hand on their chin, going “hmm”… “no, that’s not right…”
you’re gonna make me watch this shit lol
compare: when animated star trek crossed over into live action and translated this guy’s saucy power walk

these rebels characters shouldn’t be so staid. it’s like they’re barred out mass effect npcs
I hope it is not controversial to say that Filoni-verse cartoons do not exactly have the reputation of good animation
dang, jim jarmusch really summarized a feeling i feel way too often
am not a huge movie buff, but as the “MCU Mania” era of american culture unfolded, i became increasingly annoyed with a repeat conversation
“have you seen [new mcu film]”
no, i haven’t
“ahh, haven’t seen it yet, huh? i won’t spoil it”
eh, i don’t plan on seeing it
[their eyes widen slightly] “not invested in [some bullshit]?”
no, i haven’t seen any of them and i don’t care to
[person gives me a look of combined disgust/shock/fear]
i eventually got around to watching those really expensive avengers things and they were… fine. the popcorn i ate during those movies was delicious
tho, i don’t really mind things being “big” but when it gets to the point where it’s like the sort of random smalltalk people try to throw at you. that’s where i draw the line!
look, we have weather for that. just talk about how hot or cold it is. complain a little. don’t try to rope me into your fucking… social fabric. i must remain pure. i must remain curmudgeonly
edit: am now remembering this was the same situation with GoT prior to aforementioned mcu mania
when they don’t match the lighting the stagecraft rear projection stuff totally falls apart and looks like airplane or austin powers taking the piss
GoT is even worse in some ways because GoT fans like to pretend they aren’t fans of the most mainstream genre property not owned by disney, that there’s something countercultural about liking GoT
my favorite part of GoT ending was “Finally, nobody at work will ask me if I saw the previous night’s GoT episode”
I’m very happy that GoT has a legendarily bad ending so that now I have no incentive to watch it.
People thought that other one was pretty good? Dragons something?
we went back to watch season 3 and i was pleasantly surprised until we got to this and it’s abysmal. dr paperclip gives a speech about how he’s going to do good (with eugenics) and then hangs out with a fellow ex-imperial at a carnival out of a final fantasy FMV. at his check-in with a republic droid he feels sad because the new republic banned eugenics. but don’t worry, his friend is going to help him do eugenics on the dl. then the republic “mind flays” him to rehabilitate him
on andor this would be finger-tenting intrigue but on the show about cool death watch traditions the plight of this guy who only wants to do personal eugenics research is highly suspect
right, house of the dragon, the spinoff is very watchable so far because it calls back to the most competently and expensively produced era of game of thrones without any of its more annoying characters
like even if the goal is showing brutal imperial internal affairs people integrating into republic law enforcement you could have given the guy any other reason to break curfew
It’s not over yet then. Still time for it to turn into suck
finding out the reaction to Ahsoka online has been mostly positive and it’s making me feel insane
the second episode was marginally better, but still has all the same problems. the other hilarious thing about this show is they have a pretty catchy theme song that only plays over the closing credits, which play over a sequence that like zooms around a map of the galaxy. it is seriously the most dynamic part of the show, like when it comes on it feels like it is fueled by a single drop of life that the rest of the show has been squeezed in a vice to extract
i felt insane when i rewatched the prequels and my friend was like visibly perturbed that I didn’t like them but couldn’t actually articulate why he thought they were good. people just be loving that George lucas style I guess. I struggled to find out what was compelling about his direction or why it must be carried forward
