sprite-based first-person games (with mobile avatar and granular turn increments)

please always err on the side of inclusion! anything remotely close is welcome in this thread!!!

It…seems to do both?? It’s so confusing.

When there’s no enemies it is strictly grid-based BUT when you are shooting at people it has granular turning, not just granular aiming. I think this might be an edge case.

hm, there do seem to be some moments of being able to freely turn. the grid-based thing is not technically a rule, it just happens that essentially every grid-based game also restricts turning to 90 degree increments…

looks like maybe it can be added after all

at some point when i get around to it lol

i need to update the list to include @bug and @PlamzDooM 's contributions but i’m not in a state to do it lately, unfortunately. my hands hurt when i type and i’m trying to rest. eventually…

i did add skyfox to the list, which seems to to be one of the earliest games that meet the criteria!

Take it easy, I’ve actually been working on a huge Google Doc full of Sprite Based FPS games which i kinda feel proud of. With links to Downloads, Store Pages, Sources and Info, etc

whoa, that’s awesome. link that here if you want, i’d love to check it out!

Uh, it’s still wip but mostly complete. I don’t have an intro for it cause i like have no charisma to write one so that’s probably the hardest part lol. I’m open to criticism to help improve it and i want to thank you for the Amiga stuff. I linked this thread in the sources section.

hell yes this rules

Thank you, I hope to improve it and keep it up to date.

A platformer and FP exploration game (no combat) in one, so not sure if it counts but here it is. Made to advertise a Canadian restaurant.

Time stamped for the first FP bit.

the game part looks interesting, i love the art… but why does the footage look so stuttery and shit? being me, i started frame-by-framing the youtube video which is a 30 FPS video and the framerate goes from sub-10 up to mid-20s and the frame pacing is absolutely horrific, sometimes 200ms goes by without a frame, sometimes you get multiple 30 FPS frames in a row

uh, well, i hope the game runs OK? i enjoyed playing games like this at ~15 FPS in the 90s but i don’t think that’s what anyone wants here lol

There’s a lot of standing still in the trailer and watching animations play out. How much of that frame rate is just based on the rate of the sprite animations? I’d hope the 3d stuff is pretty smooth, but I love those simple animations.

i suggest using the , and . keys in the video, you’ll the see actual framerate of the footage is horrific. the animations being slow is a classic thing and wouldn’t bother me
