Is the term supposed to be specific to party RPGs as distinct from when you play a single character? Because then “gridcrawler” doesn’t really distinguish

Yeah, how is blobber even useful as a term? Is there some kind of Space Hulk-style dungeon crawler where you get seperate views and HUDs for each party member?

Also are we still doing that thing where we call everything and anything dungeon crawlers and not just things like Might and Magic, Wizardry, and Akalabeth? I don’t have to specify “first person dungeon crawler” because there’s no other kind right?

I think the term is supposed to be for party-based games, but I’m personally not hung up on that so I like the term gridcrawler.

Hired Guns does do this, but there aren’t many others. I think the term is mostly used to distinguish the older tile-based movement games from newer stuff like Elder Scrolls or Ultima Underworld. Coincidentally, the newer games that dispensed with the grid are mostly single character games. SSI did release a few party-based games with smooth movement though(at least some had a grid option though).

I don’t see a ton of difference between a party or solo anyway. RPGs are strategy gambling puzzles. Your attacks, spells, and party members are just tools to beat the dungeon. Sometimes those tools are abstracted as weapons, sometimes they’re jimbo the bard. But either way, they’re tools.

Something where party memembers can move on their own like the infinity engine games is a bigger point of distinction, IMO. But almost none of them work on a grid.

Yeah, this was actually the gravamen of my question - in the context of gridcrawlers I don’t think the distinction is really worth making.

the distinction is between Wizardry style and Baldur’s Gate style, I think

I for one know for sure that I like one of these and hate the other so

I thought this was settled and Search Action was the new term.

Oh that’s a thing? Lol

Sometimes I think to give Apple Maps a chance again and contrast but the Goog is too strong

search action is a very good term, but maybe we can do better

Anyhow, this is a whole different can of worms (maybe worth its own thread), but I’m going to start calling Zelda-clones “Hydlikes”. Please understand.

I mean I feel if we’re doing that we should call the Zelda genre Adventure games.
