Simple 2000 Series Vol. 81- The King of Fighters XV

Oh yeah, KOF14 is at Stunfest this weekend. Casuals were being streamed by twitch.tv/frionel26 but it doesn’t look like he’s streaming right now. You can find the archive of just a little bit ago along with some from last weekend. Supposedly some big names sit down and play.

The tournament is going to be streamed at http://games.dailymotion.com/asso3hitcombo/x49ll84 but I don’t know when.

And there will be another stream today on https://www.twitch.tv/kayanetv at 8pm CET, however that converts to your timezone. For the US that would include 11am PST / 2pm EST.

Oh cool, is this the build that’s going to be at Combo Breaker next weekend?

Guessing that whoever they include in the 36-character build will be most of the chars we’ve seen in gameplay trailers so far. So for new (or “new”) characters in the 36-character build, I would expect:

Daimon
Mature
Joe
Angel
Geese
Shun’ei
Chin
Ralf
Nakoruru
Mui Mui
Maxima
King (back from vacation, lol)

Really excited to see what Nakoruru and Shun’ei, especially Shun’ei. His air dash game looks kinda crazy for KOF.

Yeah, I can easily see him Shonen Jumping to the top of my favorite characters to play. That is, so long as his moves aren’t a pain in the ass to input. If he plays like a Mark of the Wolves character, I’m sold.

Been playing 2k3 for the hell of it the last few days and it reminded me how disappointing Ryo & Robert have been for the past decade of KOF games. XIV seems to be rehabilitating Robert a bit from the damage done to him by XII & XIII, but Ryo still seems incredibly boring.

What happened to Ryo’s tiger pose? Why is he just standing there, now, the way he was in Art of Fighting?

I also kind of miss charge Robert. That was a good variation.

Willing to hear an argument for another KoF soundtrack being of the level of '96, '99, 2000, or XI.

I like how the Ikari Team listens to Faith No More in 1994. And the original Esaka is pretty cool. And as mentioned, I’m weirdly fond of 2001, more because-of than despite. Otherwise… any strong arguments for one of the others?

'98 is the Nevermind

god fatal fury would make such a good movie

I always heard this story about Ryo and Robert changing stances in 96, SNK was trying to not stir shit up with Capcom, which might have been sue-happy at the time? Don’t remember the Data East fiasco timing.

Anyway Ryo and Robert are karateka of a fictional variety just like Ryu and Ken, and their new(96 new)stances suggested otherwise( kung-fu-ish for Ryo, god knows for Robert).

At some point the need for this fell evidently( Ryo had his original stance in CVS afterall), but Ryo always had that stance in low res Kofs post 95.

As opposed to the official animated ones?

97 is a really interesting half-successful experiment of ambient sound design and sparse, impactful music. Really could have used some more music though.

Rhythmic Hallucination is one of my favorite KOF musics ever. Just gives the fight against the Orochi team that proper oomph, especially combined with how they altered the stage background to go with the theme of each member as you fought them.

Yeah, that one is good. There are a few good tracks in every game, pretty much.

Although I recognize the quality of composition, I have real problems with '95. There’s very little that grabs me even a little, there. The best we can do is the new Psycho Soldier theme, which later carried over into '98.

Weird thing: in the arranged version of Omega Rugal’s theme (which is good too), right at the start we get a prominent sample of UN-DER-STAND THE CON - CEPT - OF - LOVE!

Yes, it’s the exact same sample that Naganuma used. What’s the origin of this?

It’s from a Free Huey rally speech by Stokely Carmichael

This video briefly covers it at 15:00

Haha! So the JSR soundtracks include Timothy Leary, Stokely Carmichael, and the phrase “rock that shit, homie”. Good so far.

lotta house influence in 2000 that I never noticed before

and those '97 arrangements: SHEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT

I don’t think the memory size would be too big if he had, let’s say, 4-5 specials and 2 supers based on the moves of other characters. The largest asset would be the FX and that they could load from the pre-existing character he was stealing it from. If on the other hand, he had a special from every character, that’d be kinda ridiculous.

They could do it in 3d though.

I like how Terry’s star flies off his back during his climax art.

I gotta catch up on all this KOF discussion but there’s a Limited Edition announced for the US.

The King of Fighters XIV “Burn to Fight” Premium Edition include the following:
SteelBook® - The game disc will be encased in a collectible SteelBook® emblazoned with the series’ fiery mainstay, Kyo Kusanagi, literally burning to fight.
Art book - This 144-page art book will be filled with original character/stage drawings from throughout the series.
3-Disc Soundtrack - Those looking for an audio fix will be able to enjoy a three-disc soundtrack (housed in a gorgeous Mai Shiranui illustrated case) comprised of 60+ electric songs worthy of the greatest fighting tournament in the world.
Collector’s Box - All the above items will be packaged in a scorching box adorned with familiar characters.

There’s a 38 character build in Japan right now and footage has been coming out. I haven’t watched these yet myself but Orochinagi posted some stuff of Clark, Shun-ei, Hein, Mui-Mui, etc: http://www.orochinagi.com/2016/05/kofxiv-hein-shunei-yuri-reports

Is that Falcoon?!
