me and several friends here in NYC did this really dumb project this December called “Red And Green Day” where we rewrote Green Day songs to have christmas themed lyrics and then recorded our own covers. a lot of them used midis though the two i did and some others did our own arrangements. anyway enjoy lol
Timestamped my contribution to this Klonoa arrange album, but truly, give the entire thing a listen. It came out amazing. ![]()
hybrid set to end the year
yes i just chromakeyed rez hd footage i couldn’t figure anything else out someone recommend me a cool game to put underneath my fucked up green screen next time
Last one for the year! My contribution to what turned out to be an alarmingly stacked release :S
short pangram tunes. the second one is older and most of the notes are bunched toward the end, so it’s not as elegant.
latest song i’m working on in a blitz to finish this album. probably going to re-record a couple of the vocal lines and might fuck a little more with mixing but otherwise it’s done
it’s called “just kids on the internet”
i made this in bespoke synth over the last couple of days, making dance music is getting me through winter. composing music is totally new to me so in addition to having 140 bpm beats running in my head all day no matter what i’m doing i’m very excited by the creative possibilities of music in general
here’s what the patch looks like:
the text isn’t legible when zoomed out and jpg compressed but the mauve things are note patterns, the green things are synths, the blue things are effects, and most of the purple things in this patch send control signals to any component based on timers.
it’s 256 measures long, which is as long as you can make a single control sequencer in bespoke, though theoretically i believe you could daisy chain them infinitely - although it’s really a 128 measure composition that plays once at 140 bpm and then again at 225 bpm except for the last 8 measures before the fadeout which play at 70 bpm. it’s a bunch of loops of different lengths but they’re all powers of 2, so everything lines up into 2 big loops
my understanding of composing this type of music is that you layer a lot of bullshit on top of each other and then selectively turn pieces of it on and off in sequence to create a sense of musical progression. bespoke’s songbuilder component makes it easier to do complex compositions but i wanted to limit myself to looping control sequencers in this one
anyway bespoke synth is amazing, it’s providing the tools to turn the stuff i learned from fucking around with pure data one summer 15 years ago and a tiny amount of music theory knowledge into decent-sounding music in an addictively easy manner
uploaded a couple of tracks from my hard drive that seemed to fit well together
doing my homework in public so it sinks in a little better: this melody is sad due to music theory and i’m going to do my best to explain why; i don’t know much about this stuff and welcome correction
it’s in b locrian, b is the home note, it feels settled in relation to the other notes. i have this dot sequencer hooked up to 2 chorders which feed into a strummer. i was going to have a chain of chorders that switched on and off in order to automate cycling chord progressions rooted in a note that comes in via midi input, but i ended up with two chorders active at the same time because it sounded nice
the note strummer component there accepts chords as input, it has a single input slider and when the slider crosses a threshold between notes it emits the note whose zone its entering. they’re meant to be hooked up to low frequency oscillators; this one has one that sweeps back and forth in a simple sinusoidal pattern
so in terms of music theory what this is doing is starting in E, E runs through the chorders. chorder 1 transforms E into its 5th interval in its own octave as well as the ones above and below: E + 3 Cs. chorder 2 does the same to the 4th interval but only for the input octave and above: E + 2 Bs. all of these get folded into the strummer
so you end up with B being strummed twice at the bottom of the cycle like a memory of a home you left, then at the top of the note pattern B is technically the root note entering the chorder but it still only gets played on the strummer in passing on its way up and down
so anyway this strumming sounds restless and searching for reasons ultimately mysterious to me
i’ll send the patch to anyone who asks just lmk
then you run the audio signal through two differently tuned distortion effects and then also make it play under itself at half frequency at a delay on the order of like a measure and also distort that differently and it begins to sound like actual music (of a sort) now it’s a sad mechanical ghost dragon or a haunted crane or something
now with cania’s assistance and some creepy infrasound it’s a pretty solid hell waltz
was noodling for fun but fleshed it out and decided i’ll probably add this song to my game. fits the existing vibe and the intro area could use some music i think.
