i’ve been writing an assload of songs lately mostly as an exercise to prove i could do it again. i did a bunch when i was much younger (ages 18-21 or so) of just recording really rough sketches on the spot so i had something if i intended to revisit it. but i never really did much with most of them. then about a month and a half ago, i decided on a whim to start doing this again now. and i’ve tried to keep up momentum and make myself keep doing it. now i have 60 recordings i don’t really know what to do with, but at least made me feel a lot better about my ability to do this. and they’re honestly consistently a lot better than the things i came up with when i was 19. who knew? lol. it does make me mad i didn’t just put my head down and do this earlier.

anyway here’s several examples in case this might be useful to someone. these aren’t all necessarily my favorites (honestly having trouble picking favorites because i just kinda did them on the spot and didn’t think that much about it) - and are all very rough on the spot recordings and kind of goofy, not something i intend to release or whatever in this form - just meant to make an record of an idea if i want to revisit it. i mostly just mumble and warble trying to figure out what the melody part might be so don’t expect much there lol.

(also don’t ask me what any lyrics mean, i’m just saying words)

the vibe of this one is similar to some others i did but i like how it came out

i like the chords in this, also my failed warbling at the end kinda ruins the momentum but it could build nicely

this one is one of them that i think will probably end up being a song

i also like how uh… warlike this one is? like a march or something. it’s shorter but the seed of something i’ll probably want to mess with in the future

this one is from the other day and i like how it came out, it’s been lodged in my brain.

and here’s something more major key since a lot of the ones i posted are gloomier

anyway hope this was useful to someone!

oh is this your live active cultures

a handful of those songs are on that, yes. most of the others on that album are either among the first songs i wrote in high school or for some “song a week” thing on a forum.

a song i’m working on called ‘hourglass’

lyrics

So worn and used
You can see right through
I don’t know what to do

Nowhere to hide
From your x-ray eyes
Something you supplied
Keeps me paralyzed

Slow falling sand, I never planned on giving up
And then it seemed
My ragged dreams had all been struck

I’d imagine the expansion on repeat
As I touch down
On firmer ground I find my feet

So overdue
Now I feel brand new
I didn’t have a clue

So compromised
'til I almost died
On a beeline back to you
(There) must be something true

Some hollowed out and broken down ambivalence
That closing door
Was never more than powerless

Begged and pleaded
With a seed in me I can’t ignore
Said I don’t need it
But I still come back for more

So overdue
But I feel brand new
I couldn’t buy a clue

No trace of light
'til I lost my mind
On a deadline just for you
I know what I believe
(And) I know what’s left to do

i like this one a lot, it has all the things i like to do in songs

this one has been kicking around for awhile and still has no lyrics, but imo the chord progression is one of my better ones, maybe my favorite. it’s also a piece i worked on obsessively for awhile and took a lot more effort than most

name of the song is ‘premiere’

lately, i try to name my songs basically immediately just to have a word to reference them by. for awhile i was writing so many that if i didn’t name them and write them down right away they were liable to get lost

11 and a half bar blues(?) currently titled ‘dumbass blues’
