in some ways it’s a lot easier than the pico8 editor; again can’t overstate how much more control i have over the sound that comes out.
was pretty painless to learn. took me a couple hours a couple nights (although the actual song took longer as i grappled with learning fm-specific stuff). cool little program!
Pretty cool! Wonder how much of the cart stuff like this would actually take up. I don’t have a sense of like how many instruments/tracks/patterns were used in most games.
your rom is 35KB and that’s in an unoptimized format so it can be played directly. what’s the size of the .vgm file? contemporary retail md/genesis roms range from 128KB to 4MB
speaking of weeklybeat, what do folks find is a good way to have a community holding you accountable to finishing or at least releasing music on a regular basis?
I suck at holding self-imposed deadlines so having a community type feel to it would be good.
maybe we can start something as a community of sbutts? like, “post a track a week” type thing? weeklybeat seems to have all kinds of rules to it, but idk, might be nice.
I’m honestly not doing weeklybeats because of the community aspect - because it’s trash80’s project there are a bunch of chip people in there that I’m not super interested in communicating with and no one seems to really understand my music there so I’m entirely using weeklybeats as a calendar-based repository of tracks for myself, and I’m mostly utilizing the upload and the fact that it displays which weeks you’ve uploaded the tracks for, which is cool to see over the whole year
but I’d be really into doing something SB-related, I’ve even thought about some kind of streaming show event thing where anyone who wants to participate that has a streaming setup plays a set - I’m unfortunately a little too busy at the moment to plan something like that but I’m open to helping on it in the future
fwiw the weeklybeats rules are mostly there to prevent you from uploading other people’s music or copyrighted material, since it’s a solo website project tim just doesn’t have enough time to deal with DMCA stuff, there’s never been any problems with uploading WIPs and stuff since those rules were written a long time ago
bored so im going to repost some tracks i made wayyy back in high school (2007) - just over 13 years to the day
10-29-07 – i had been messing around with software for about 4-5 months (on and very much off) at this point – I got into hip hop late 2006 which really spurred my interest, but this was basically my first ‘real’ track. it sticks to a pretty traditional hip hop instrumental structure, but i was using all free software and sounds (ardour and hydrogen), so this lent itself to some weirdness - i think i have a weird forest sample running in the background, samples of some DJ scratches, I think this is a free vocal off some weird indie pop type thing? my drums were never really good but hydrogen helped me throw some stuff together. anyway moving on
11-06-07 – things continuing to be weird here. there’s some funny artifacts of stuff i thought was ‘just cool’ - check out those hard left and hard right pans! this is a mozart sample with tibetan chanting. i thought i was so cool showing off all the samples at the beginning. im not really sure if this is like a hip hop structure really… i remember chopping this mozart sample and just getting so bored of having a ‘verse’ where the beat doesn’t dramatically switch up… spoilers i had adhd. moving on
11-10-07 – this is the last beat I did in high school for whatever reason… here’s the original song, it’s quite interesting. the drums clip like crazy too, obv i didn’t know mixing was a thing. I dunno i find it interesting looking back and seeing my inspiration sort of coming from flipping classical samples, scratches, and random noises.
Also, to answer your previous question: in this case, at least, the vgm is bigger? So not sure what the deal with that is! Maybe vgm is a more verbose format since it supports multiple systems?
EDIT: Just updated it so there’s a little space before it loops. Was jarring before.
attempted to see if i learned anything from genesis tracking by trying a pico8 track again. conclusion: sort of! definitely more picky on how i use my limited channels.
it’s a collection of lowest-possible quality covers of whatever i was into back in 2014. mostly boomer shit. i have a hunch @jodeaux may enjoy this and please accept my apologies if not. i do not have the license to perform any of these tunes so uh it’s all good don’t arrest me fbi jeez i don’t know how the law works
there is no real track order just throw it on in alpha order or throw that bad boy on shuffle
tracklist though:
a little lost (arthur russell)
a mighty fortress is our god (lutheran hymn)
bridge over troubled water (simon & garfunkel)
carolina in my mind (james taylor)
fire and rain (james taylor)
live till you die (emitt rhodes)
long time gone (everly brothers)
melodies of life (nobuo uematsu / emiko shiratori)
