Here’s something I’m probably not going to go on with for now, so I might as well share it with someone. I got it in my head to redesign Dragon Quest 1 monsters. Or, more like, I was just using the DQ1 designs as drawing prompts. I did some sketches, and I made a 4k image with spaces for and names of 46 monsters (DQ1 has 13 monster designs not counting the Dragon Lord. It reuses most of them 3 times, flipping the sprites, layering on weapons, and switching pallets. I figured I would do a different monster for each variation + 1, but that wouldn’t fit in one texture, so I tweaked the list a bit).
Anyway, I did a bunch of sketches, but so far only 4 made it to a semi-finished state. Two of them are magician types, so you can see what I was doing with higher-level interpretations. I’m about to get busy again, so this is getting shelved, but these were pretty fun, so I’ll probably revisit it eventually. Only one sprite is supposed to appear on this background at a time, by the way – right in the middle. I just packed them in here for efficiency’s sake.

So the Pico-8 game I started earlier this year is nearly done. Hopefully I can finish up the final features when I’m off for the holidays. This is probably the most complete thing I’ve ever made and I mostly just feel relief with the physical proof that I am capable of being motivated sometimes.
I’ll probably talk about my thoughts on Pico-8 as a platform later!

A comic and four storyboards from my video game series that will never exist, the Liber series. The first one is the comic, the next three are alternate endings for if various bad guys win in the second game, and the last is a random scene from early in the second game.

I’m back. This time I tried to format them like a strategy guide with a little in-game flavor text included. Maybe someday I’ll throw these into RPG Maker and come up with something, but my problem with that is I that I’m never satisfied unless I do all the assets myself and I tend to get defeated by fiddly things like tile transitions. For now, I’m just aiming for a fantasy instruction manual.
I’m straying pretty far from the source with these, but maybe you can still see where I’m coming from.
