+1 Alien
+1 Turin Horse
+1 Robocop
+1 Lancelot du Lac
+1 Tokyo Gore Police*

Edit: Changed one of my +1s because Turin Horse showed up, and that’s my favorite Bela Tarr film.

Did Others list these films I don’t got it but here’s a list for posterity:

LotR Return of the King or the whole trilogy as a piece.
Collateral
For All Mankind
One Cut of The Dead
Final Countdown

The Passenger
Tears In The Lion’s Mane
The Key
The Long Goodbye
Muppet’s Christmas Carol

And I am pretty certain I could +1
Chungking Express
Streets of Fire
Blade Runner
Alien (which is the best film)
Pocco Rosco

Scrolling back I didn’t see anyone put Vertigo so I didn’t have a conniption fit.

I did @Rudie :- )

Mainly for the Bernard Herrmann music and the hypnotic effect of the slow driving / following scenes. I really like it.

oh yeah “does this really belong here instead of Alien” is a good rubric for my list thnku

It isn’t my favorite but that it gets left off Best of lists for being horror/scifi is a crime. The world is real. The characters are real. The fear is real.

I haven’t posted until now because I can’t hope to whittle this down to only 10 movies but uh here goes my best shot anyway:

Faust (1926)
Stalker (1979)
Touch of Zen (1971)
Come and See (1985)
Night on the Galactic Railroad (1985)
A Man Escaped (1956)
The Killer (1989)
Charisma (1999)
Big Bang Love, Juvenile A (2006)
Sissy-boy Slap Party (2004)

I’m liable to swap most of these movies out at a moment’s notice, and I still feel like I’m leaving out so many works I find personally important

anyway, sorry for the obviousness of my list

Edit: Here’s my +1s

Movies have been around for so long, I feel like I’m over-representing shit from the last 40 years, would love to do a list of just movies pre-1960 (to pick an arbitrary date)

60s isn’t totally arbitrary, that’s when the hays code stuff stopped really being enforced so can be seen as the start of ‘modern’ cinema. (there’s obviously a lot of pre code stuff that is really rad too, but 60s onwards makes sense as the stuff that gets represented here [and just generally in wider culture])

I didn’t know about +1’s when I made my list, so I’m going to +1 these for now:

Touch of Zen (I thought long and hard about this one when making my list)
Millennium Mambo

+1 Yojimbo

+1 In The Mood For Love

+1 The Battle Of Algiers

+1 Akira

Did no one seriously mention The Warriors?

Do I have to amend my list?

the assassin probably would have made my list if i had an extra slot i guess. right up there with rian johnson’s ‘brick’ in terms of my favorite final scene-to-credits soundtrack choices. obviously the assassin is a better movie than that in every other way though.

Oh yes! That final scene + song choice is amazing! This was the last movie I saw in a local art house theater that closed shortly after. I noticed the film was playing there for one day only about an hour before showtime and I’m so grateful I experienced this in person at the theater.

So I have some good memories connected to the film but I also wanted to have at least one Hou Hsiao-hsien film on my list.

My +1s are:

Last year at marienbad
Picnic at hanging rock
Tie xi qu west of the tracks
The emperor’s naked army marches on
Showgirls

Also decided it was prob unnecessary to have two catherine breillat films on the list so i replaced romance with Choose Me 1984, just a relentlessly entertaining movie featuring exactly two teddy pendergrass songs. Will never regret including two assayas films tho :fr::fr::fr:
