SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE šŸ’€

Funny, for me I am finding this game far more inviting and To My Speed than any Souls game, which were desperately difficult and anxiety inducing for me even as I loved them while I was playing (tho never beat one). It’s just immediately more gratifying and fun to play, for me.

his animations are so great, I was so happy when I realized they set up that throw and deliberately put a cliff edge next to him so you get hucked into the void

and the useless jump kick and his elbow drop!

He hits you with a frickin powerbomb!

well I beat the fucker. don’t know what I learned or achieved here, seemed like I just finally got to the 2nd form with enough health that I didn’t have to start the fight trying to dick around healing up and then got lucky with my zigs and zags. and of course he gets up zombified afterwards to run off for some future torture session.

Gotta love the swingin’ of these big boys!

They’re well animated and designed to make you feel bad when you zoom in on their face for the deathblow. Still don’t feel like I have the hang of them, though – sneak attacks are so tempting and I haven’t figured out a counterable attack for them, and they’re really tricky to watch how many swings they’ll pull in a row. Luckily they don’t hit nearly as hard as they look.

I enjoyed the ominous pounding noise I heard behind a gate that I later realized was only a hammer bro pounding the withered grass like he was trying to make mochi

Yeah for the size of these guys they don’t hit like their previous game counterparts. The hop on one foot windup stands out much like the monk’s martial artistry, as some of this team’s best work.

I didn’t catch that mochi making. You’re probably gonna enjoy the hell outta some monkey business down in the valley.

Sekiro is the first time From Software seems aware of what they just put you through, because the next main boss you face is unlike anything you’ve fought in a fromsoft game yet.

Sekiro is willing to give you easy victories as rewards for hard-fought frustrating victories.

Holy shit, moving and grappling around in this game is so incredibly satisfying. i have spent like two hours exploring the first proper level and looking for treasure + trying to stealth kill as many dudes as possible, but also just running and leaping and grappling for the hell of it. (i am so glad you just lose a little health when you fall off a cliff)

Traversal is super fun but i dunno if i really get the combat yet. Wolf is so fragile at this point that ive been running away from major opponents. i tried to fight the first general you run into and the big chained ogre guy and they both totally kicked my ass so i figure i’ll slow roll it until i get more tools and techniques. Also ive been taking the L rather than resurrecting. i figure if something keeps killing me without breaking much of a sweat, i should go do something else instead of beating my head against the wall.

Anyone got suggestions for skills to invest in right away?

I made a beeline for Breath of Life: Light so I’d get some vitality back for each deathblow. I don’t know if I’d consider it necessary now that I’ve gotten more familiar with the combat but it’s nice to have it and keep my health topped off.

I’m currently facing off against Jizou the Drunkard at Hirata Estate. I’m hoping there’s a way to finish the encounter and keep the other guy who’s there alive because earlier I tried it with him fighting by my side but he died. However I’ve found I can go around the left side of the area and attract just Jizou to follow me off out of the way a bit so I’m hoping I can drop him without alerting all his mooks.

Love the game, even more so than Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Fantastic level design. I slept on DMC V because I read it didn’t really have much in the way of cool levels to explore and that’s like half of what I want in these kinds of games. From makes great levels and you’re really rewarded in Sekiro by exploring.

beeline for Breath of Life: Light if you want a much more comfortable exploration buffer

most of the starting skills in every skill tree are pretty much must-haves

The Ashina skill tree with Ichimonji, Ascending Carp and Descending Carp is straight up ā€˜make you better at what you’re already doing’ skills, and they’re cheap.

Yeah Ichimonji remains one of the most killer, good damage when it gets through and posture when blocked. Combine with the very understated combo w/ Mid-Air Combat Arts = death from above.

And double Ichi…is to go…even…further…beeyyoon-

I’m still saving for that sheathed strike.

The final area may be my favourite in the whole game

Beat the game. Gorgeous, but a lot of the bosses towards the end aren’t very good. By which I mean the last boss took me 7 hours to beat and I’m pretty much done with this game now.

While everyone here seems to be blazing through the game in record time, I am still stuck on Lady Butterfly

up to guardian ape on one path and corrupted monk, i feel like i have zero actual understanding of the combat. i get perfect deflecting but im struggling to build and maintain posture & i feel like i have no solid sense of, like, what tools might be useful in a given battle excepting, like, firecrackers=good against beasts. like with the snake eyes generals, for example, i spammed the spear and it built mad meter on them. why? no clue, i havent found much use for it elsewhere

I’m about to go to the final area. Looking forward to it! I’m curious about the last boss.

I have criticisms of the game but they’re way more nitpicky and not like… broad-commentary-about-the-game. There are parts that feel like they’re holdovers from the souls games and as much as I like those games, the more distance this took from the soulsborne paradigm, the more I liked it.

The boss I just fought was tougher than Genichiro in a lot of ways, but I was also much better at the game at this point so it was actually not bad? Only fought him 5 times before winning.

From what I understand, there are two different final bosses in the game

Fucking hell, after several hours on Lady Butterfly I killed her, and she just gets back up? How are you supposed to do this?

Is there any other route to take besides this and the one with the guy on the horse?
