The final word: grind on any old mission you want.
I don’t know why it took me 20 hours to realize that if a team member is sure to die next turn, especially due to something foreseeable like poison, I can just sandwich them for a free unite attack.
Edit: now that I think about it more this can make unite attack based formations stronger.
RIP Heart On Cheek Lady
The palette swaps in this game are truly something. I think only 2 people from my team (the one who talks during cutscenes and maybe Chiago?) don’t have clones
I’m warming up to this game’s aesthetic now that I have Chiago, who’s some sort of inane JRPG glamrock villain royalty wearing purple lipstick
so when do you start to recruit more characters and stuff in urpina’s story?
I’m a little miffed that all those side battles I did produced basically nothing interesting, the writing isn’t exactly great on its own merits and combat is decent but they’re not really giving me a lot to get excited about after 2 hours
there are two recruitable characters that i know of in the second area, one of them can’t be missed
sidequests are saga levels of obtuse and possible to irreversibly mess up
the combat has more going on than i imagine you got from two felix-hours but if it’s not growing on you then
Yeah this game is all about the battle system for me, and it honestly starts mediocre. This is a game that takes a while to click and becomes exponentially better the more options you have in battle and you start with too few. The lack of healing, focus on mitigation / status / placement and high difficulty in every battle makes it very demanding and niche too
Oh BTW I learned today that if an enemy resists a status attack, it will have a better chance of working the next time. So it’s very much worth it to keep using poison / paralysis on stronger enemies even if they don’t work
Is "Miss"ing the same as resisting?
Yes. I mean if the status doesn’t work but the monster is not immune to it, it will have a higher chance of working next time
I don’t think there’s a way to know if an enemy is immune to status without using a pure status tech like Mesmerize - the dmg + status tech annoyingly don’t display why their status failed when that happens
i do miss the super non-linear exploration of rs1-3 and how rare it is in those games to see any two players run the exact same party composition, guess that means i should play leonard
after double dip it’s definitely a sit in front of the monitor for three hours kind of game
the visuals and storytelling aren’t totally unappealing for what they are but I wish it were a little less conservative if anything, I didn’t expect it to be played so straight
Urpina’s campaign is very constricted, especially by SaGa standards. It’s always guiding you to a next objective node and doesn’t let you go off the path. It’s fine for getting a handle on the mechanics because you can’t overwhelm yourself but once you know what you’re doing it doesn’t often let you stretch your legs (at least until you hit Chapter 2 apparently). But if you don’t like it I’d say try switching to someone else, particularly Leonard if you just want the completely open experience.
I have acquired some characters and I don’t know if I’ve missed any but if I count just the order of the regions Urpina travels: I got two character in region 2, one in region 5, one in region 6, one in region 7, and one in region 8 (where I currently am).
But if you’re looking for new combat tools don’t forget to keep an eye on the weapon types when reforging weapon, and switching what kind of weapon a character uses can get you new roles. I keep finding new weapons in my inventory somehow and I’m not completely sure where they’re coming from.
Are there legit palette swaps in the recruitable characters? A couple of Urpina’s starting retinue are Beatric and Jamrot, two generic looking knights but I haven’t encountered anyone like them again so I guess they are technically unique. They also have bespoke dialogue, sometimes referencing Urpina and sometimes talking about themselves (Beatrice seems to not want anyone to see her under her armor?). I also passed this “hermit” in some woods but couldn’t figure out what to do with him.
Something else I saw the game mention is that enemies affected by a status effect are more susceptible to status effects as well, making it easier to not only re-apply the effect before it disappates but to stack effects. So if you poison someone it becomes easier to paralyze them afterwards.
Every now and then Urpina makes me wonder if she’s the real monster.
I opened the gate blocking Nessy’s path out of the lake but it died because I never killed the monsters on the other side. RIP.
she’s the most relatable character tbh
Seeing the dope box art thread reminded me Ambitions got new key art but I’m not sure who the artist is. It’s really nice though. I guess this would act as the de factor box art for this digital release.
And each of the main characters got their own piece.
Urpina
Leonard
Taria
Balmaint
Anyway, I’m pretty sure the region I’m in is a ticking time bomb because every time I do a battle the volcano looks like it’s getting more and more ready to explode and probably blow up the nice town underneath it that offers discounts on every elemental type. I found a way to reverse the process but it’s limited. Legend has it a demon lives in the volcano or something so I probably need to find some way to make it appear and kill it.
Originally there was no smoke, or at least it wasn’t doing this.
I’m at a point where I have several new characters who are under-leveled and my long running characters could benefit from switching to new weapons but this volcano gives me no room to play.
Also when looking up the Ambitions key art I saw this, and I hope this google translation is accurate and a SaGa game really does give you a character who operates a churro stand.
This character is in my party! He talks about churros nonstop
ok wow i’ve never played a saga game but this thread has done an amazing job selling me on this one
