I would like to play Saga Frontier portably… has anybody tried playing it on Vita? How well would it run?

Ok, disregard this: I just remembered that it’s coming out for the Switch in remastered form

the SaGa renaissance continues and i couldnt be happier. sf1 remaster seems great so far too

I’m so happy about this. Especially about the new one
U. SaGa will really benefit from the remaster treatment and I wouldn’t have dared dream about it

playing as Asellus and just reached Shrike, did I fuck up by not buying any spells in the castle?

Also a little confused how the stat levelling works in this, does it just go by what category of action you had selected, eg Spells increase JP, weapon skills increase WP etc? Sometimes the stats increase after battle even if that character didn’t take an action.

Also what does JP stand for, Jelly points??

leveling as asellus is really fucked up because she only gains mystic abilities from each of the 3 goons who chase her down over the first third-to-half of her story and she really needs those mystic abilities to eventually work as a character (by the way don’t finish any of those fights with her dead or you’ll miss one permanently), but you’ll wind up encountering them at weird intervals without meaning to, when they’re balanced on the expectation that you’ll have done 30-40 minutes of quests between each of them and have a full party and such.

I can’t remember if the first one in shrike happens more or less immediately without any pacing but the solution I’ve always used for asellus that I think I picked up in like, the bradygames guide in 1997, is to buy the asura from the store that only takes life points before you leave her hometown, because it gives her a very good sword combo that isn’t obsolete for the like the first 2/3 of her story. if you didn’t get that, you’ll be fine after you get her mystic stuff rolling, but you’ll need a better party in the short term.

from what I remember stat growth is pretty consistent per-character and doesn’t depend so much on how you use them (maybe to a small extent but not like eg FF2, at least not for your human characters, the mages are always gonna be mages), but you do need to use abilities to gain more abilities of that type.

ah okay, I thought it seemed like I was gaining a lot of WP by just using the weapon skills for most battles, and gaining psychic when I started using mystic skills.

yeah I think I skipped getting the asura and got the armor and the sand phial or whatever, but I did find a secret sword in the sewer so she can actually do some decent damage now.

in general asellus’ quest is one of the more interesting ones but it probably has some of the unkindest pacing – you get a few unique-to-her, story-centric characters after the halfway point, but they’re all mystics, and mystics are as unintuitive to raise as monsters while also being less likely to accidentally turn out good, but rushing to that halfway point is also kind of tricky because triggering the 3 goons has to happen gradually. so you’ll have to at least commit to a few of the stronger characters that just about anyone can recruit (gen, rouge, etc.)

stat growth for humans is 100% secondary to ability growth (and with exceptions like the asura, equipment is tertiary) – if they’re fitting the combat roles you want, their stats will keep up

I started with emelia since the cursor defaulted on her. very strong hook. trying to hunt down runes and wishing i had healing magic because good lord that spider boss had a ton of hp and i burnt a ton of items reviving the three girls. need healing magic and more party members asap

If you’re looking for party members go to Scrap

They added a barebones story guide in the menus which adds just the right amount of context and help

This game doesn’t seem to account for the console being in sleep mode, already thinks I racked up 23 hours of playtime

tbh i never even beat a single story in the original SF and i still love it. probably will just use a guide, this time

fuse shows up on the character select when you beat your first scenario

Please. Square Enix needs that fat SaGa money to make up for the Yuji Naka game

Anyway no, the PSX version is good, although since it’s a PSX RPG battles will feel very slow without frameskip

I just finished the light labyrinth with Blue and I think the weird mysterious unfinished room on the right has not been finished and is still useless. I’m kinda glad
