yeah it took me a long time to realize that businesses don’t actually care about quality. AI was the breaking point for me, because it’s obvious that the results are shittier, and I thought it would just be a matter of people seeing that. But no, that’s totally immaterial. Everybody knows this and some people are just okay with it.

I’ve been meaning to go back and try them again to see if it’s still possible to intentionally wrench that kind of surrealism out of them. I’m guessing that only a local version of Stable Diffusion could do it now, with all the “safeguards” they’ve put on the others.
That’s where the fun really is, yes. Well that and getting Google to generate a “picture of a blue cartoon hedgehog with red shoes holding a photorealistic sausage dripping with mayo”.

It is not really very interesting to me whether the pale creatures that periodically heave themselves belching up out of Silicon Valley’s ketamine bogs really believe that AI is going to become god, or whether this is just their flubby attempt at salesmanship. One reason it is not very interesting is that everything they have touted as the future of some essential human thing or other—the future of art, or money—has mostly crashed out in ways that left behind very little useful residue. Another is that the ways in which AI is used in the present, by your lower-effort plagiarists and scammers, are so manifestly not the future of anything that works, but rather both the present and the future of shitting-up web search results, which is roughly analogous to saying that robocalls about homeowners insurance are the future of human communication.

I assume a lot of garbage publishers already crowdsource translation so this is likely to be more of the same except at once more explicit and more dismissive of human exploitation.

They depend on a small army of freelance translators and a larger army of freelance editors.
Some unsavory freelance translators probably use machine translation services and some very bad freelance translators would probably improve if they just used machine translation
Labor exploitation is the norm, and manga and ln translation would be improved if people were brought in house at various companies and paid livable wages
Ancient Magus Bride had a decent translation when it was still at seven seas so this is definitely a downgrade

tbh, this Mantra Engine looks good.
I have been reading Korean web comics using OCR+AI Translator for a year. I have to configure these dialogs areas on images by myself. If there’s a built-in specialized translation tool like this, I would love to use this service instead of waiting for human translations. AI also means that it provides the possibility for more early-age rare works. The problem of improve and downgrade like Tupla said, it exists, but not start after AI tools published.
Back to 2007, I didn’t know any Japanese at all. Google Translate was my best/only option for playing Japanese games. I had to type/guess the Gojuon line by line and wait for translation. I’m not good at learning languages, so I signed up for JLPT classes and spent a lot of money from 2010 to 2015, and I translate many erogames shit for practicing my Japanese while I update my level of JLPT, many of them includes helps from Google translate and Goo.ne.jp translator.
This time with AI language tools, I have been learning English using them last year. I passed many language test scores required without any human teachers help. I feel that I progresses much faster than I did with the help of a human teacher, epically the language noob like me (not mention the money I saved).
Everyone have voice typing on their devices now, like few Roman generals who had a record servant slave back the days. Maybe high quality human flavor translation on artworks return to being an expensive privilege in the future? I don’t know. At this stage, I think Japanese company much more honestly than others on AI. Better than this

you’re moving goalposts bud. i’m glad these tools helped to learn english and do quick and dirty fan translations so you can keep up with your stories but that has nothing to do with corporations firing all their translators because C-grade machine translation that obliterates any nuance or metaphor in the original text is cheaper
like we have other forum members playing the dragon quest mmo with DeepL translation and posting screenshots here, i know what these tools can do. i’d use it for npc text on a game that’s never getting localized, sure, but i’m not gonna fool myself i’m enjoying the work in its best form or that it’s anywhere near a replacement for a decent localization team

Whatever the actual explanation for consciousness is will be reductive simply because reductivity is a feature of grammar and not reality, so I’m not convinced by these sorts of refutations.
