Robot: You have 20 seconds to comply ("AI")

ive been complaining about and screenshotting google’s quick results being blatantly wrong for years, and AI has only made it 100x worse

i feel like dall-e 3 is truly a new quality threshold for image pollution. for now regular people can just use it in bing instead of fucking with discord or GPUs or whatever and it’s just good enough at recreating copyrighted characters, meme formats, and various aesthetics that there is gonna be a giant wave of this stuff. it’s basically at or better than midjourney for tons of stuff.

using image generators is morally corrupt

putting this in the AI thread because it’s interesting how Google has ruined their own search engine and didn’t even need to use AI to do it. This is so bald-facedly evil and, I assume, also quite ineffective.

They used the less hip-n-happenin’ instance of AI called Machine Learning to determine the best keyword alterations to suit advertising campaigns. It’s still letting a computer decide the “best” short-term optimization that ends up reducing the long-term utility of the service; notably because it has no memory or predictive analysis of long-term impacts built into the algorithm.

The article touches a bit on how the manipulation hurts everyone involved except Google:

It’s also a guaranteed way to harm everyone except Google. This system reduces search engine quality for users and drives up advertiser expenses. Google can get away with it because these manipulations are imperceptible to the user and advertiser, and the company has effectively captured more than 90 percent market share.

but now Google is starting to feel the effects of this manipulation, in terms of losing user trust and now fading advertising money as brands see the impact lessen over time.

a highly confidential effort called Project Mercury, urgent missives to “shake the sofa cushions” to generate more advertising revenue on the search engine results page (SERP), distressed emails about the sustained decline in the ad-triggering searches that generate most of Google’s money

so I think you’re spot on with your assumption there.

god, why is this reported in first person, extremely obnoxious

Cause it’s based on the author seeing a slide for 3 seconds and heavy conjecture

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s entirely true but it’s basically speculative op-ed even by the author’s own account of things, probably couldn’t run any other way

I dunno about morally but something about them just makes my brain shut off. Like I become completely uninterested. It’s starting to make me reconsider and realize that I consider handmade memes to be art.

i spent a lot of time generating AI images and then processing them heavily in paint.net or whatever, hoping to draw out something interesting. At the time I thought I was successful but in retrospect I think they look kind of garbage.

It’s hard to inject intent or perspective into something that doesn’t have any. I’d have been better off finding clipart and doing the same processes.

whoops

anyway i think this demonstrates partially how untrustworthy google is because it’s easy to believe they would simply insert brand names into searches whenever they liked. but also how impossible any of this is to understand from an outsider’s view.

consequence of poorly designed education systems, chatgpt is a good fit for homework because homework is by definition wasteful, pointless busy work

i keep telling my mother - a professional educator of spoiled girls - this and she does a kind of hand-over-ears-la-la-la routine

yeah alicia keeps harping on this, if AI can do the work you assign then the work you assigned was designed poorly. this is just showing the cracks in an already deeply flawed method and it should hopefully force educators to get better at producing meaningful learning experiences

I have figured out how to make Bing’s Dall-E to give me images in the style of wet latex costume monsters from 1980s movies, and I am now lost to your cause. I have been seduced.
