the devs went out of their way to clarify in the official japanese guidebook for nemesis that the city is struck by “an experimental thermobaric missile” rather than a nuke, which makes the idea of leaving it abandoned for 28 years funny. it’s free real estate!
since this is improbably using outbreak lore, they should also bring back the virus mechanic from that game and force you to beat it within a limited time. the people are demanding a ticking clock countdown!
Alyssa Ashcroft does get mentioned in Biohazard, so it’s a more recent connection they might have been sitting on for a while.
they also explicitly referenced outbreak multiple times in the re2 remake. it’s honestly a completely explicable pull for re9 at this point
It’s a nuke in the re3 remake officially. The crater in the re9 trailer couldn’t have have been made by anything smaller than a 100kt weapon anyway. It would be weird if this game took place in the original timeline after all the remakes and their weird attempts to clean up the lore a bit.
is there anything else in the remakes that explicitly retcons the originals like that? i played them for the first time this year and the only thing i picked up on was cutting barry out of re3 when a lot of people considered that the canon ending
also i will say that having finally played them the idea of requiem going back seems way less exciting to me when two of the last four RE games were already set in raccoon city. experience NEST and the RPD reimagined in the RE engine…again.
for example the structure of the re2 remake inherently retcons the deployment of mr. x and that whole thing with the tyrants to be different for…some reason. the re3 remake now takes place over an even more condensed series of hours for some reason. it’s all really bizarre stuff where you kind of have to care about thinking about the games as more than games to notice most of it, and it’s all like okay this is a minor change i guess but why???
oh also the big railgun in re3 was also retconned to be a hand portable unit I guess because it looks cooler? but it has a way shittier name than demon sword of paracelsus because they renamed it to “Ferromagnetic Infantry-use Next Generation Railgun” which is just bullshit tactical speak. it feels like capcom is obsessed with making the remakes feel Different but not in a like…interesting or pointed way.
Its an excerise in being able to retcon whatever you want. the remakes functionally replace the old timeline and I think that’s why they committed so hard to remaking re4 for no good reason. Easier to follow up on without decades of lore since these have come out in such close proximity.
i dug the rail gun! swapping out the dead factory for Not NEST so they could reuse assets from 2 remake felt terrible but i thought the rail gun was the one inspired part of it. that boss fight doesn’t play any better than the original but getting to shoot the rail gun was more satisfying for me than luring nemesis in front of it
differences like bertolucci getting killed by mr. x rather than birkin i picked up along the way but it didn’t seem to directly contradict anything that came in later games or lead to vastly different outcomes the way the nuke does. i will never play 4 remake on general principle.
… They renamed it to FINGeR?
the thermobaric weapon always had the same place a nuke does in the story and geography anyway (we used a WMD on our own guys, is that fucked up or what!) since iirc none of the games post 3 ever really went back to raccoon city either since a wide quarantine zone had been established post-explosion. in this way treating it like chornobyl in the new one makes sense
that’s always seemed like a plot grenade punted into the future to me, like the idea of G-virus creatures extra mutated by radiation in a Raccoon City Zone of Exclusion is pretty damn cool
i haven’t played Outbreak so i thought for a sec that this new girl was Sherry Birkin finally coming back after RE6, ah well
this FINGeR goes bang…
is outbreak worth playing?
It’s a hard game to recommend if you are going to play it solo. There are some great, atmospheric levels to explore but it’’s nowhere as fun as a prior RE games at any point when you are by yourself I think. You can emulate it and play online through fan servers, which might make a fun SB playdate actually.
also the one thing i know about it is that it has a fucking badass intro cutscene
and uhhh a lot of yt videos of hunter γ vore
It’s a nightmare if you play with anyone who is bad at classic style resident evil and there are several scenarios you basically have to replay multiple times til you figure it out. But its so cool conceptually.
Did they make PT into a full game when I wasn’t looking
This is still Resident Evil. You’re still going to sell a jeweled chalice to buy a shotgun, and then have a boss fight with a giant caterpillar.
as god intended
