RESIDENT EVIL....

I think they usually do that in the form of paid DLC that lets you just unlock everything in the store. I’d never pay for it but someone may want to do that, so I feel like it’s pretty benign. Or like emblematic of a compromise on vision for the sake of pandering to people’s anxiety about time-convenience that the industry has considered settled since like Dead Space 3 with it’s in-game purchases to speed up the crafting system progression.

they usually let you pay like 2 dollars to get the infinite ammo pistol earlier or whatever. This looks funny as fuck

cant decide if im still a little sad u cant be an incompetent child and cheat ur way to a whole new game experience or if i think its kind of a win 2 fund content by tricking ppl with disposable income into missing the point

It’s over fifteen years past that cheats were shuffled into a minor ancillary revenue stream to make way for another order of magnitude content increase at the same price and audience size. These days, though the wire is still live, it’s considered tame and only dangerous if a developer tries to move it out of its normal containment. Yes I have stepped on that wire.

I’m impressed that Mercenaries can seemingly fill the screen with Ganados but the AI for the most part is either catatonic or I have indeed spoiled myself on Professional difficulty

Also 3 maps is stingy

Also Louis laying down the Final Fight Pipe Justice

Also Hunk’s spider fingers pose with every necksnap

played a bunch of re4r yesterday between mercs and the equivalent of the original game’s chapter 1-1 thru 1-3 on hardcore mode… mercs does feel like kind of an after thought, stuff like mayhem mode or even the timer pickups feels really low rent. it ends up playing more like re4 / 5 / 6 imo bc hit reactions and staggers are much more consistent

but yeah… the lack of consistent hit reactions and staggers combined with the sheer agression and number of enemies swarming you makes this pretty intense. i died on the first village encounter 40 times in part bc i was trying to figure out how to really work with the new mechanics like knife parry timings and triggering stagger or getting away from grabs. it basically feels like if you let an enemy wander off screen too close to you you’re kind of fucked which is very ummm dark souls to me in a way i really enjoy…

but yeah grabbing is still actually really hard to deal with bc you can put multiple shots into someone without stopping their charge (sort of a street fighter super armor command grab sitch imo) and ducking out of the way is really inconsistent for me. ig the stagger values being semi random is also sort of in line with super turbo having random dizzy values (have you ever gotten touch of death strong thrown by a chun li player bc she got back to back to back dizzies)

idk there are minor nitpicks like the way the bullet is cast from the camera rather than the actual gun… but i enjoy it. it feels like a “real action game” in a way i really enjoy and it’s nice to play something that is a) a real action game and b) neither a soulslike nor a character action game nor a shooter tho obvs it is kind of a triangulation of all 3 categories in a very resident evil way

but yeah original re4 and re4r both have an interesting difficulty curve where the games start out with some of their hardest encounters before powering you up a lil… the knife is reallyyyy awesome in this also like it gets as much done as the pistol and playing this with a focus mostly on the pistol and knife has been super satisfying to me

basically please i hope they make more games like this than first person horror stuff

i like that this takes place in 2015 and jill looks exactly like she did in 1998 because they don’t have any other recent models lying around for her. she is 41 years old

lol @ the table breaking underneath her while shes shooting

the part where all of them are dodging the giant snake tail and rebecca is sliding underneath, oh my god, looks like another resident evil cg movie that will make your brain leak out of your ears like vendettas amazing gun kata scenes that feel like a parody of john wick… i’m guessing it won’t be worse than the one where leon is an operator talking about how he loves america but she just don’t love him and i will 100% watch it the second its out on blu ray of course. I almost died when the movie trailer guy said BIOHAZARD…DEATH ISLAND…

LET LEON GO ON VACATION ALREADY ITS BEEN LITERAL DECADES

I think I finally understand why they put up billboard ads for GTA V in LA, because I am invested in watching this movie just to see what their Frankenstein interpretation of San Francisco looks like.

do these take place in the re4 (2005) continuity or the re4 (2023) continuity

my impression is that these remakes are supposed to supersede the originals in that aspect…they used re2 remake actors for leon and claire in infinite darkness the cg series they did before this. the cg movies have always taken place in the main continuity, this one is between re6 and re7, so based on all that and Jill’s re3 remake appearance in death island id safely say re4 2023 is the new canon. it IS weird now though because they made at least one CG movie where leon is clearly og re4 leon, even being voiced by the same guy, but at this point I’ve thought about it more than capcom has

Still think this holds true at the end of the game. I’m honestly biased but where RE2make had a wow aspect to it, like a kind of style and intensity of vision that said this is how RE is going to be now, which was diluted with the forgiveable hack job that was RE3make, this one just feels redundant and obligatory. What a shame to say this about Resident Evil 4.

I can’t believe Excella is on the monitor at the end. I thought the RE5 thing would prove to be a false rumor, but she’s there clear as 4K. My favorite line in the whole game, maybe besides the one liner Leon says to Saddler as he kills him, is when the las plagas erupts from the first giant and he goes “huh, you got worms too?”

Fun Fact: Jill Valentine’s beret was a deliberate design choice to draw attention away from the fact that she was voiced by Jennifer Aniston, who throughout the 1990’s was largely known for Having Hair

Let’s say I’m a fool and wanna make good on my childhood-into-teens-into-adulthood dream of, uh, playing all of these. What would probably be the best order to go about it where I don’t horribly burn out like I do every time I want to beat an entire series?

So far I have beat:

  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut (Jill Run)

And that’s it!

At the very least I want to beat the original Playstation trilogy, anyway. As good a starting point as any.

I’d say the first three in release order (making sure to do A/B run of RE2 because it actually offers a really unique experience that is worth playing), then REmake, returning to Code Veronica, and finishing up with RE4. Everything outside and beyond doesn’t feel essential for a tour through the past to me.
