Not the PS2 version, if you’re gonna emulate it. The PC port is totally fine imo,

I just watched a video of the Atari ST version of Bubble Ghost and the title screen has Metal Hurlant in the corner, did they publish it?
What’s the connection between Bubble Ghost and Heavy Metal Magazine?

Is this one a good entry point into the series for a noob? I ask because it’s dirt cheap

I played it on Vita and got maybe two hours in and had a good time so you’re good.

Did any of us actually play Below which is a mere 4 bucks on PSN right now and I’m stupid?

I am sure I ask this every year but do folks still pay for anti-virus software or just trust Bill Gates to keep you safe?

paying for antivirus software is a bigger mistake than just trusting windows defender

3rd party antivirus software is pretty universally bad now

Very little information online about this, so hard to know the specifics… There’s mention that Metal Hurlant featured game reviews alongside the comic. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of those things where one issue came with a copy of Bubble Ghost or something as a pack-in, but again there’s not much info…

other ERE games have metal hurlant logos in them, mobygames has them as publisher and developer but i think developer is a misattribution (???)

Half wondering if them and ERE had some kind of deal. A lot of those games were dated the same year, 1987, that Metal Hurlant stopped publishing any more issues…

Am considering getting a Steam Deck to help me clear my PC backlog, mainly using it for various indie games. I get the impression it’s relatively trouble free in terms of optimisation for most games but is there any hidden troubles that are worth knowing before seriously investing in one? I generally don’t like having to occasionally tweak system and other settings to get something running smoothly on PC and am not sure a Steam deck is miles different. Like if a game doesn’t meet Steam’s compatibility check is it a nightmare or can the average PC player figure it out?

I’m not a huge fan of the form factor either and seems like it’s pretty friendly to 3rd party controllers. Any experience with this is useful to know. Please feel free to just direct me to any older posts if you have em.

only gets into fussy territory when you’re trying to set up emulators, other stores, other applications and that fussiness is typical linux/wine/proton stuff

within the steam UI the worst case scenario is force quitting an application because it’s hanging or something 3D running poorly

if you don’t like the form factor consider moonlight streaming on a general purpose tablet with an external controller

i would be a little concerned about the weight/ergonomics

I might give Steam link a try but I think I’d also play more if the whole thing were portable for travel etc. Usually when I play Switch these days I bring a pillow or prop support for longer sessions but I know the Steam Deck is also just bigger and more awkward for this kinda thing. Good to have a fusscheck, thanks!

it is probably fussiest when it does come to external controllers but it’s mostly have to reorder them every time. steam input is a miracle

I have a steam dock as well and find myself having to restart the deck relatively frequently if I’m switching between that and portable a lot, but it’s not much of a hassle

I personally find the form factor nicer than the switch due to the grips. I don’t really have any pain issues though

Been messing with one since this summer and I have enjoyed it a lot. I’ve personally had hell setting up EmuDeck, and some alternative store stuff that absolutely should work, uh, won’t, for whatever reason.

Strictly within SteamOS, you might run into games where you’ll need to run a custom version of Proton, edit some .ini files in Desktop Mode, among other quirks. Some day I’ll get around to running the batch script that converts all of the Way of the Samurai 3 videos to a format that will show up.

Side loading .exes can be hit or miss but it kinda works! I can run Devotion and stuff like Barkley without issue (granted I had to map controls for Barkley), and it took a lot of doing and hoop-jumping but I got the modded version of Silent Hill 2 to run (granted I can only launch it by launching the configuration editor and then launching the game - trying to launch the game itself fails).

It rules, though. I’ve played through some janky stuff that probably shouldn’t work as well as it does (m&kb only games like Sands of Time map well enough to the controls, though I had to add a walk toggle on one of the paddles), and it’s wild to be able to play stuff like Hitman or Control with entirely acceptable visuals and framerates.

I dunno if they’re still doing the LCD refurbs, but I would just get a 64 GB one and use the money you save on that for a 1 TB SSD to pop in there.

I’ll also add that I got a kinda cheap-ish grip for my Steam Deck that doesn’t exactly make it more ergonomic (it feels pretty good in the hand as-is), but does let it stand freely on a desk. I got this bright purple one because, hell, why not.

I’ve had the best luck pairing Xbox controllers to it, though you may run into the thing that has freaked me out twice now where a controller pairs but does nothing (you gotta update the firmware via an Xbox or Windows, I think, maybe there’s another way, but after that it works fine).

There’s like a million different docks out there that work with it, so there’s no need to pay extra for the Valve one. Because I’m grungy and nasty I just use that Asus ROG Ally power brick (the one Best Buy keeps selling for like $30 every other week) that you can update to be compatible with it, since I can also use it to dock my Switch. It’s not a pretty solution, but it’s one that goes easily into a bag, so.
