I’m pretty sure I got mine from craigslist but it’s been a while

I wrote a draft post and then discarded it (I thought it came across as too mean) that you should never take hardware advice from felix because he’ll always recommend a 400 dollar thing that he was able to get for a song on craigslist, a deal no one else will ever be able to find again

and then you post this, confirming everything I almost said

Hm yes this seems doable, though fitting them on the desk might be a lil tight

my desktop computer is hooked up to my TV / giant column speakers, my laptop occasionally i’ll use a bluetooth speaker with but the built in speakers are good enough for personal use. if i had to have one for a desktop monitor i’d just get a bottom-mounted soundbar

I just checked my email and I paid $160 for them

HAve you lookked at the DIY styrofoam speakers that were popular on reddit a while back? They are decent cheap, though the low end response on them is lacking to say the least

Looking to play Grandia for the first time. I have access to the Playstation version (on my Vita) or the Switch version… is there a strong reason to play the Switch one over the PS1 one?

displays with built-in speakers, headphones

something that plugs into the lil green audio out like normal

they’ll have to have a built-in amp, so search for active speakers. anything over 4W will be great

for something a little more wild and crazy, USB speakers will not need a separate power cable

The remastered version on Switch has a gloopy filter over all the sprites that looks pretty ugly and can’t be turned off. If I remember right there’s nothing like speed up options or anything so there’s probably nothing stopping you from just playing the PS1 version.

The Saturn has a translation patch and is the superior version. The playstation version is fine.

The modern ports are the playstation version running in a bad emulator with horrible smearing and I think stretched 16x9.

Not sure if it was stretched, but I do remember they did some weird things to get the 4:3 graphics to fit widescreen. Like the battle backgrounds sometimes seemed to have some really weird blurry nonsense off to the sides, like they’d used some really early AI generative algorithm to fill in the blank space and did nothing to make it look like anything

Thanks! I will proceed with the PS1 version on the Vita

It depends mainly on budget/use case/desk space but basically ā€œgamingā€ branded speakers/headsets are usually overpriced for their actual sound quality and you can get something better/cheaper by going with something made by a regular audio company.

For ā€œi just need something and don’t have a lot of spaceā€ the creative pebbles are $20 and and generally punch above their weight, but they still have that computer speaker sound like those speakers that came packaged with gateway2000s or whatever. They also have a more expensive version with a floor subwoofer if that’s your thing (I’ve never been a fan of floor subwoofers) for $50 but at that point -

If you want something louder/cleaner and have a little more space/budget there’s a bunch of good bookshelf speakers/monitors that have built in subs (like the nice presonus set mentioned by doolittle) that sound a LOT better for $80-100, but they take up a lot of desk space. I have a pair of Edifier R1280Ts I got for $100 that I like, though in addition to being big it’s also a lot of cords. If you can get both for $100 i’d go with the Presonus set. The next appreciable step up here would probably be like $350-400 dollars (unless your craiglist deal hunter skill is maxxed like felix).

If you have like $150-$200 to spend, good speaker options are limited but there are some really nice headphones in this price range like the Sennheiser 560S or beyerdynamic DT770s that will sound better than the speakers (i’m not an audiophile but BG3 with the 560s really blew my mind with how much I had been missing) but then you also have to put on / take off headphones every time you sit down.

don’t buy the creative pebbles, some people will find them annoying

(i am spoilering this in case someone has these and think they are fine - if that’s the case, don’t read this when you connect them via usb there is a click everytime the sound stops playing. it’s very quiet and i don’t notice it very much, but it’s super annoying when i do, and it’s much more noticeable when the speakers are loud )

(EDIT: this might be limited to the version i have (v3), not sure)

Oh interesting, I never noticed it when I had them for a few weeks though I usually have my pc speakers running pretty quietly. That would be a dealbreaker, but then at that price point then I don’t have much of a recommendation, but you could probably just grab whatever Logitech or creative set is on sale and it’d be fine.

Floor subwoofer is exactly what I’m trying to avoid after many many years with one. Such a pain to sweep down there.

I already have headphones that are Fine, speakers are required for the children. Think I’ll just reorganize to make the desk space needed.

I went digging around boxes in my shed and found my old Klipsch speakers I got back in…college? Maybe shortly after?

Anyway, a decade or so in the Texas heat didn’t hurt them a bit, they still sound great, but I gotta keep the bass tuned super low or my chihuahua panics.

Dunno if they still make these things, but they’re good.

Everyone I know has been rocking the same speakers on their desktop since 2000. I have the Bostons that came with a Gateway way back when.
