also make sure to go grab Streamlink Twitch GUI so you can just browse Twitch like a normal person except you never have to deal with their website

Whatever happened to Platinum?

They were always frugal when it came to development to allow niche games and property tie-ins to just about break even but i think they struggled to scale up in the PS4 era. That Granblue Fantasy game and Bayonetta 3 both had protracted development as well as their stab at a GAAS which I can’t even remember the title of. They seemingly couldn’t adapt very well to modern development despite Automata being a big success. I think their partnership with Nintendo also didn’t really pay off since most of those projects were kinda unnecessarily complex control schemes requiring lots of practice coupled with poor pacing (Wonderful 101 and Astral Chain).

I think part of the studio didn’t really get that modernising certain design decisions would generally be a net good

Edit: Bayonetta Origins is their secret last hurrah

Are there any handheld game things that can also double as PC game controllers?

Why hasn’t Sony made Knack 3 for ps5 and is it because it would be so peak that no one would ever be satisfied by a non-Knack vidcon again?

I mean just imagine Knack but with the power of ps5. You’re already hating the last game you thought you enjoyed, aren’t you?

I need an ā€˜Astro Bot devouring his Son, Knack’ image. If there were a Knack 3 he’d have to have a new maximum size which would start to resemble a complex protein structure model to accommodate the additional rendered objects. It would be horrific and also the most interesting Knack game as a result.

yes

here are 3 i know of

Vita GitHub - Rinnegatamante/VitaPad: Transform your PSVITA into a PC Controller
3DS GitHub - CTurt/3DSController
Switch GitHub - WerWolv/SwitchXBOXController: Turn your Nintendo Switch into an XBOX360 controller to play on your Windows computer

an Anbernic apparently has an option to do this over USB as well

I don’t have to imagine

Knack on the PS5 finally holds 60 fps

:sickos:

the three mainline Bayo games and Astral Chain have all sold 1M+ on Switch and thus qualify for the top 100 best selling Switch games list

seemingly the only game they did with Nintendo on the Switch to have not sold well (or as well) is Bayo Origins

they’re also not at fault for Relink’s long development time, Cygames took the game internally after a year or so of Platinum’s work and also the director that worked on it there went to Cygames along with it

honestly aside from breakouts, the character action game has a sales ceiling a like, 3-5 million and hitting 1M is already doing okay (I mean, not for something that languished in dev hell for 6 years and has a 20 minutes credits sequence like Relink. but Cygames got horse money so)

I forgot about Star Fox Zero and Scalebound as well though these are arguably more the fault of their respective publishers.

I think the difference now is development times are longer and the price of these games haven’t really kept pace with inflation so a studio like Platinum presumably can’t keep relying on 1mil-ish sellers in the same way it did in 2009. Bayo 3 was in development hell for a good while and I’m skeptical it really made its money back but then this isn’t really representative of the publisher relationship with Nintendo in terms of what the financial deals are so idk.

I think moreso than financially paying off, Platinum haven’t really maintained the same critical legacy since Automata and have had an unlucky series of projects just kinda spaffing away. If they’re helping with the next Nier game I’ll collect my stub and politely wait in the queue.

this reminded me of a Konami(?) PS2 game (musou-style) that boasted a ridiculous number on enemies on the backside box-art, Ć  la

10.000 enemies on the map at once

or so, does anyone remember that?

Ah Ikusa Gami and its claim of being able to have 65,535 units onscreen at once. Got me to import it, anyway. Don’t think I ever knew it came out with an English translation in EU/AU 1.5 years later.

Oh it was Konami who published the EU/AU versions, says GameFAQs. It was developed by and originally published in Japan and Asia by Genki.

It might be more possible to count them now

than it was on original hardware
