Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore

Does Maximo kind of suck?

Last time I tried both Maximos I fear this is true.

I think Army of Zin is a bit more forgiving and has more going on generally. The first Maximo is kinda cruel for its own sake a lot of the time, and forgets to make sure to feel good when you do succeed.

Knocking down the skeleton and then just uh…waiting for it to get back up because otherwise it will attack you from behind as you’re trying to find the badly telegraphed next linear path feels pretty shit.

the first maximo game is brutally hard, but it is really quite satisfying as far as I’m concerned. the level design is fun, the secrets are well-disguised, the enemies are varied and interesting, the movement is tight. one of my absolute favorite PS2 games… for me it’s like a proto-soulsian action thing. you will fail repeatedly. you might ruin your save, even, because you ran out of resources. like a fucking resident evil game…

it really successfully carries on the makaimura stuff for me - meaningfully different but perfectly in sequence

i would definitely argue maximo 1 is in no way shit and is in fact an extremely good game, at least

anybody gonna hateplay the wayforward yars metroidvania that just came out?

I can’t say I wasn’t tempted but there is too much stuff I want to play coming out.

I’ll play it one day when I get it for free from some source or super cheap in a bundle. I care not for the sanctity of Yar’s Revenge and my appetite for that style of game is fairly large.

I’ll do it once I clean out my backlog.

I just got Stalker trilogy for the ps4. Is Clear sky worth playing or should I just play Shadows of Chernobyl and Call of Prypiat?

oh no

(EDIT: this was directed to rudie)

only the first is worth playing IMO but who knows you might like the call of duty playground of 2 or the awful abomination that is 3’s story

how’s switch emulation going post yuzu? what’s the thing to use now?

I mean there’s a new yuzu fork with a different name every week until Nintendo C&Ds it and someone makes another

It’s kind of hard/tiring to keep up with

What was the consensus on Sackboy? I am playing it coop again after Astro Bot and it’s… real fun now?

so Ryujinx didn’t get touched by Nintendo, most likely because they weren’t shitting where they eat and also they’re using this one neat trick of being based out of Brazil

IIRC, Ryujinx requires a bit more setup to get going but is probably as good as Yuzu

Is there a good list of the PSVR1 games that are worth playing? I only have Astro Bot and Deracine pencilled in.

  • Wipeout (and to much a lesser degree GT Sport)
  • Superhot, Hitman 3, Polybius, Tetris Effect and Sprint Vector (if you never had another VR platform)
  • Iron Man (neat demo, full game probably not worth it)
  • Ace Combat 7 (just a handful of levels are in VR but they’re good)
