Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore

I also last upgraded circa Titanfall 2 and Doom 2016 before my most recent upgrade coincided with Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty (neither of which have particularly good shooting, 2016 was kind of the peak there)

Couldnā€™t tell ya if itā€™s any good, but I recall some buzz around Trepang2 as a sorta modern FEAR-alike.

Though if you wanna stress test your card with a mid-FPS, Far Cry 6 would certainly fit the bill. Is it good? Not really. Does it have a lot going on? Kinda.

It certainly ran like shit on my PS4 Pro, anyway.

Edit: Thereā€™s also that free ray traced version of Quake 2, and the nightmare that is Portal RT (I tried it with my AMD card and crashed my PC).

yeah unfortunately I donā€™t like the actual gameplay of cyberpunk or Alan Wake much at all but their presentation sure was something

Are West & Zampella still at Respawn or do I remember rightly reading that they left there too?

From a quick google it looks like Zampella still runs Respawn while West had left a decade ago, joining Epic a few years back. Donā€™t know if heā€™s still there.

Is this really the latest Far Cry? It felt like a series that would never stop. Edit: Looks like Ubisoft is in an Assassinā€™s Creed factory mode since a year or two ago.

Yeah, this was the last one, at least until this next one about, uh, rescuing your family in 24 hours as theyā€™re killed off one by one, or something, if the rumors are to be believed.

Dani (at least girl Dani) is a decent protagonist. When she starts singing along with Ricky Martinā€¦good stuff.

Game totally wastes having Giancarlo Esposito as the villain, though. I never finished the game, granted, but heā€™s mostly there to just show up in a few cutscenes and talk over loudspeakers.

Is that not the case for all Far Cry villains after the introduction?

Nah itā€™s pretty par for course, though as I understand it the payoff with him is pretty weak.

west left before titanfall 1, zampellaā€™s CEO, no credits for steve fukuda since directing titanfall 2 in 2016 so heā€™s probably about to have his incubator unceremoniously axed

a lot of original apex legends people are gone in the last five years too so i guess itā€™s just licensed star wars games where lightsabers are blunt weapons from here on out

Woof.

Dang this is such an on-point assessment of that game lol.

Like itā€™s got these various systems layered on top of the base gameplay of shootinā€™ and capturing bases, like the recruiting random people in the population to send them off on missions for resources, wildlife-NPC interaction, the fire propagation stuff thatā€™s been in these since Far Cry 2, that just describing it all makes it sound interesting. But actually engaging with it is just noooot quite that interesting.

It certainly ran like shit on my PS4 Pro, anyway.

It ran okay-ish on my Xbox One X and a lot better on the Series X, where itā€™s a mostly stable 60 fps with occasional screen tearing.

I donā€™t know if itā€™s the game to put a new computer through its paces but it is a mediocre FPS, for sure. Iā€™m currently playing it to have a big map to unfog while listening to podcasts.

is there a good free PDF denoiser? options otherwise are adobe or taking it apart, denoising all the images, and putting it back together but i feel like Thereā€™s Got To Be A Better Way

free PDF tooling is pretty bad as a rule (no one wants to compete with Adobe even though the spec is mostly open)ā€¦ Preview of all things is the only genuinely good non-Acrobat graphical application for working with PDFs (and in true apple fashion, does a lot of QoL stuff silently when you save a file, so you never know if itā€™ll help until you try), and otherwise you have to assemble big gnarly pandoc / ghostscript toolchains

I think Iā€™d like to work my way up to playing Alan Wake 2 on the TV, so Iā€™m assuming I should do this on a PS5. If I have no experience with any of the other games in the franchise, what else should I play first? The first game, probably? Control? Do I need to fit a Max Payne in there somewhere?

iā€™ve never played max payne but got what i needed to for aw2 purposes through osmosis. alan wake 1 iā€™d play first. control you could play before or after ā€“ itā€™s a different story, not directly serialized like 1 ā†’ 2. might be nice to play it after when youā€™re hungry for more

i am generally not a fan of prerequisite homework for media but i think itā€™d be nonsensical at the start without 1. iā€™d play 1 on easy ā€“ the combat grates

the lead from quantum break plays a different character named tim breaker

oh and i think the DLC is bundled these days but the two packs, the signal and the writer are the most important lead-in

alan wakeā€™s american nightmare ties in too but itā€™sā€¦ not a great game. you might, like, watch a cutscene omnibus unless you have the patience for a pretty thin xbla-grade horde mode

my partner disagrees re: american nightmare fwiw, says itā€™s essential

fwiw, I think I am an outlier here but my problem with Remedy is that I think they alternate releasing games that are underdesigned and games that are underwritten, which is frustrating because theyā€™re like perfect classics in every other way. I mention this because I think itā€™s quite easy to burn out on one or the other shortcoming if you insist on doing that much prep
