Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore (Part 4)

All I have to offer is that some people here (incl. @Felix) really liked the Total War one

Yeah, it’s a very different kind of game obviously — RotK is a very arcane kind of strategy sub genre that has been around since the NES and feels like it and has a dedicated fan base, whereas the Total War one accomplishes a) being an above average total war game (granted I’ve only played two, this is mostly word of mouth) and b) using the setting well. Possibly more appealing on that basis.

My instincts tell me to play Aerobiz, Total War, and Dynasty Warriors in that order before thinking of playing the Romance games

Ahaha I’m not ideologically pure anymore because for some reason taking Google “AI’s” wholesale swiped script answers it stuck in on top of search results didn’t bother me. = P I looked for actual web results first but there weren’t any useful ones, I suppose Google is now keeping good search results as grist for its AI so it seems smarter. ; D

This one didn’t SEEM to delete my entire HD or anything when I was testing it

    @echo off
    setlocal enabledelayedexpansion

    REM Define the extensions to keep, separated by spaces.
    REM Example: set "keep_extensions=jpg png gif"
    set "keep_extensions=bat bin cue"

    echo Deleting files in the current directory except for: %keep_extensions%

    for %%f in (*.*) do (
        set "file_extension=%%~xf"
        set "file_extension=!file_extension:~1!" REM Remove the leading dot

        set "found=0"
        for %%e in (%keep_extensions%) do (
            if /i "!file_extension!"=="%%e" set "found=1"
        )

        if !found! equ 0 (
            echo Deleting: "%%f"
            del "%%f"
        )
    )

    echo Deletion process complete.
    exit

Back up your files! Then if you want to try this thing, save as as a .bat file, put it in directory where you want to delete stuff, double-click it. I don’t THINK it does recursive directories, just the one the .bat is in. If you want a list of deleted files, replace “exit” at end with “pause”

As currently configured it won’t delete .bat files, that’s to keep it from deleting itself. ^ _^

Oh and it won’t delete bin and cue but come to think of it I can’t tell if maybe you wanted to keep just chd or what. Anyway you can change that in that “set” line near the top.

Looks like the Total War one is 80% off so I should probably give it a look..

If someone said they absolutely had to play one of the Koei Tecmo non-Dynasty Warriors ones, would you have any specific preference?

Is the Unity security vulnerability significant enough that we’re going to need to make a list of games made between 2017 and now that have been abandoned and can only be played on an airgapped system?

i am annoyed at the prospect of having to patch like 4-5 games

No, it doesn’t look that severe. Attackers need to already have some other kind of local access to exploit the vulnerability. It ought to be fixed because Unity games could become a link in an exploit chain, but it doesn’t pose a critical risk on its own.

you don’t have to make a list because Unity released a utility for end users to patch executables themselves

i made a game with don miguel’s release of rpg maker 2000 and am trying to figure out if there’s any good way to distribute it for modern computers

EasyRPG apparently doesn’t have movie playback support so that’s out

the font rendering issue that’s specific to don miguel’s release can apparently be fixed with some exe patching nonsense i haven’t tried yet, so that’s something

however, i’ve had movie playback crash on other people’s computers, and music playback doesn’t work (specifically music! sounds are fine). i can’t tell if these problems are because of rpg maker 2000 or don miguel, and idk how to even begin fixing them

is civilisation vi on switch good? it seems like a game that would be great on a handheld, but if it’s some severely simplified version, or it takes eons for the cpu to take its turn then i don’t want it

How do I distinguish between Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra by sound? Every time one of their songs come up in trivia, it’s a coin flip for me, unless it’s like “My Way” or one of the White Christmas songs that are characteristic to their respective performers.

the annoying answer is to listen to them enough to tell the difference. but Bing Crosby sounds older to me, I don’t know how to talk about music tho

i have ratpack blindness too and struggle to guess between Frank and Dino all the time

crosby sounds lighter than sinatra a lot of the time i don’t know how to articulate this properly but as sinatra’s career goes on his voice gets deeper. they do actually sound different but it’s like daphny said you have to listen to them.. to me it’s really obvious but unfortunately i have heard a lot of frank sinatra in my life and i get what daphny means by crosby sounding “older” i think it has to do with the way his voice is usually mixed in with the orchestra i think in classic big band style and sinatra sounds like he’s above it

Bing has a smoother, more refined tone. A real crooner. Sinatra is a little rougher and more warbly, and sounds sometimes like he’s almost talk-singing. (And is therefore a lot more interesting imo.)

Once you master the auditory discrepancy there, you gotta move on and learn the difference between Ghostface Killah and Action Bronson.

from a friend i hear it works well but when the games go longer or get bigger everything slows down to a definitely noticeable degree .

Yeah it’s fine. the graphics are janked down do make it work, so especially the leaders are choppier than other consoles. anything bigger than a standard map takes a long time for turns in the late game, but its ok before that. tends to crash a fair bit at that point too like i probably have a crash once every game :expressionless:

that being said its all the same otherwise, and probably my most played switch game

e: oh also something about being touchscreen/buttons at the same time makes a few weird bugs, eg the ‘assign a governor to a city’ list defaults to wanting you to touch it, and is borked for scrolling with the buttons

civ 6 already has a remarkably terrible ui so that all sounds very unfortunate
