Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore (Part 4)

I know it as a major esport. Thinking about Clash Royale causes me to be dour.

The helmet and mustache there look like they’re made from the same material, leading me to wonder if that’s just hair and not a helmet, or if he has a random armor piece fashioned in the shape of a mustache.

I really think that’s supposed to be hair. It’s dreadful but I really think it is. I especially hate the way his eyebrows are built up on top of his play-doh fringe.

Has anyone tried out that new Operation Nightstrikers release?
I was mostly interested in it for Nightstriker, but was wondering about the other games since playing light gun games with just analogue controls seems like it would be a bit rote, like slightly fancier whack-a-mole.

The gun games are not the greatest and I think playing with a regular thumbstick would make the experience worse. But they’re also not bad. I think there is a joycon pointer option on the switch. Personally I like playing gun games with a trackball mouse. But I’m actually playing these with the USB dempa cyber stick since they support them. It’s really fun (if difficult) to pick the control option where the stick is 1:1 with the screen so you gotta make really fine movements.

Night strikers is one of the greats and a good use of M2 gadgets, but I’m a little disappointed they don’t let you put the mega CD music with the arcade version. They do have some remixed music but that just kinda rubs it in bc it proves they are technically capable of putting any music. And the mega CD port is right there in the DLC.

I have a thumb RSI that’s preventing me from gaming the way I’d like to… What I really want is some kind of foot-based controller that can replace an analog stick. I want to control the left analog stick with my foot and still press right hand buttons on a regular controller, Does anything like this exist?

I’d also appreciate any other suggestions for weird controllers to help me play games without using my left thumb.

Precision with a foot for an analogue input will likely be tiring/painful for more than 10 minutes unless you wanna put in the practice time. I did manage some JRPGs with my big toe but that didn’t require a lot of precision usually. Wouldn’t recommend unless your hands are out of action.

I’d suggest a left analogue stick you can move with your hand gripping it or just the index/middle finger. You can get caps to make the top of an analogue stick larger, they’re usually 3d printed these days. Otherwise you’d likely need to invest in a more bespoke accessibility controller which can be v expensive.

Thanks for the ideas! I decided I’m going to pick up a PS5 Access Controller and give that a try. The big arcade style joystick attachment seems like it could be good for me for some games, and also I saw this great guide someone posted on Reddit showing how he uses the controller for the same hand condition I have:

I never played Clash Royale, but I did play Sega and Koji Igarashi’s fairy tale-themed Clash Royale rip-off Revolve:8 for the few months it was alive. Man, that was a game too good for this world. Great character designs, great character writing, really fun personality. Like many mobile games, Clash Royale-likes are mechanically fun games mired in the swamp that is GAAS and online-only content.

I would’ve loved this

Update: I got one and it totally rules. I was able to get it configured pretty easily in a way that I think, when used with my left hand and paired with a regular dualsense in my right hand, will allow me to play pretty much any game reasonably well without straining my hand. I played the first 45 minutes or so of Silksong successfully and didn’t feel my ability to play well was particularly hampered by this controller setup. It was worth the buy for sure. I’ll post about it some more once I’ve had more time with it!

I was going to emulate Ace Combat: Assault Horizon + DLC on Xenia but just saw it got a PC release? Is that version worth playing over emulation?
