Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore (Part 4)

my understanding is that it should be basically identical besides lower res / longer load times /etc. & theres no real distinction between it and the ps5 version so if u ever get a ps5 it should all go right over . The recent bundle with season 1 & 2 dlc that came out for switch 2 launch is also on ps4 store .

gb: nemesis ii, operation c, serpent, battle city, bill and ted’s excellent game boy adventure, motorcross maniacs, nekketsu kouha kunio-kun: bangai ranto hen, any of the takara-published fighting game ports, pocket bomberman, klax (hudson soft version), shanghai (hal version), batman, batman: the animated series, tetris: rosy retrospection

gbc: elevator action ex, street fighter alpha, atelier marie, motorcross maniacs 2, konami gb collection vol. 1-4, metal gear: ghost babel, pocket pro wrestling: perfect wrestler, super robot pinball

both systems are curently going through a pretty big indie boom too, so go and see what captures your interest on itch, too

It depends on what interests you. If you like RPGs, Great Greed is pretty unique and tends to get overlooked among everything else that’s available. Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru is really nice, too. If you’re looking for action, Trax is a fantastic game from HAL. I also have a soft spot for Heiankyo Alien and Balloon Kid.

Hamtaro Ham-Hams Unite is incredibly charming.

As a browsing mode, I years ago played every single GB/GBC game in a disorganized romset. I took a lot of screenshots of the games as I played them on an Xbox. Probably fun to go through those blogposts and play something that caught your interest.

The axe might also have an ancient link to the 150~ish games I kept after that experiment.

It is pretty fun to go through these screenshots.

Game Boy Camera is essential imo but no idea how that works with emulation now.

Also two of my favourites from that system!

Kaeru...

takes the framework of a 2D Zelda, strips it of all its mechanical depth and yet manages to almost be more enjoyable for it?! Feels like a string of interactive gags from start to finish. A real joy!

Balloon Kid

slows down the pace of your usual side-scroller and almost entirely forgoes platforming. Something almost soothing about gently floating around the place, flapping to and fro. I like the whole narrative conceit as well of saving your little brother instead of some princess or romantic interest…

Some others:

Donkey Kong

Really love how expressive its movement feels, the best parts of Mario 64 made better by embracing gameboy dinkiness to great effect. I love being a tiny guy back-flipping around the place and occasionally messing up and falling flat on my face!

Kirby's Dreamland

feels to me like the platonic ideal of a Kirby game: a mostly frictionless romp through a bunch of varied environments that doesn’t outstay its welcome — short and sweet. yeah, yeah, it’s missing the transformation mechanics that have since become that characters trademark, but it barely lacks for it!

Gargoyle's Quest

always makes me laugh with its botched localisation, slight jankiness characteristic of early third-party gameboy titles and very specific movement controls. Also just love this guy’s sprite:

Banishing Racer and Skate or Die: Bad n Rad

aren’t necessarily good games but I enjoy their attempts to make a platformer on wheels. Arguably ill-advised but can sometimes be fun for how much they commit to the bit…

X

more technically impressive than it is enjoyable to play, but I can’t deny it pulls off a really strong and oppressive atmosphere similar in some ways to what metroid 2 does… Soundtrack also has some major bops thanks to Kazumi Totaka.

Edit: I’d be remiss not to also mention…

many good GB mentions (special shoutout to @MintyJuffowup for the technical mediocre, but rose-tinted glasses fav Heiankyo Alien :servbotsalute: ) itt, only want to add:

Darkwing Duck:
solid Jump’n’Gun, and has some real bangers in its OST, especially the Wolfduck-Stage

is :kissing_closed_eyes: :ok_hand:

Amazing Penguin gotta let a longplay do the explaining what you do

and recommend giving the crunchy OST a shot. And i mean CRUNCHY.

mickey’s racing adventure and mickey’s speedway usa are great gbc games. the latter is probably the better racing game, while the former has a pretty involved single-player mode

Someone needs to mention Mole Mania, so I guess it’ll be me.

I’m not gonna tell you it’s a good game, but Ghostbusters 2 for the Game Boy was probably the best Ghostbusters game until…uh, well, they put a better version of it on the Famicom. Maybe the Genesis game depending on how you feel about it, but definitely til the 2009 game.

The graphics are cute and it’s kinda fun to see how they accomplished the zap-and-trap mechanic, even if it’s super clunky and you gotta pray that your other Ghostbuster didn’t get stuck on a desk or something.

It’s also one of the few in that era that actually has Winston! Which is fucked up, in hindsight!!

Toki Tori–it’s also still the best-looking version of the game

Gonna be me and tell people to play Wizardry Gaiden on GB. I’ve already sunk way too many hours into it and it’s really good. I’m sure the second and third are also good, but I’ve got a ways to go to get there.
