Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore (Part 4)

When I read the Iliad, whenever a hero threw a spear at someone I imagined the attack animation from Shining Force 2

Yes there is Troy Total War (flawed but likable) and Spartan Total Warrior (classic banger) (Zeus, heap your blessings upon Creative Assembly) but… where, oh where, is the beautifully animated pixel character-based Iliad/Greek mythology srpg that we all know everyone wants…

I feel Shining Force is less comparable to other SRPGs and more like, if you want to play JRPGs but can’t get into the random encounters and dungeons etc, Shining Force is a good alternative. I think it being kinda easy and basic is part of the appeal, plus being able to wander around towns and find secrets etc

what should i use if i want to play a patched rom of super famicom ff5 with some kind of crt shader?

mesen is my recommendation for snes emulator but it doesn’t have “crt shaders”. it does have composite/s-video/rgb approximation which is sufficient for me.

retroarch or ares have shaders but they are both a whole other thing

What does it offer that makes it recommended?

The main CRT shader format is .slang. Retroarch and Ares are multi-system emulators that support it built-in, SNES9x is a standalone emulator that supports it, and you can also apply a CRT filter on top of any other SNES emulator using ShaderGlass.

I use Retroarch personally, but I don’t love it. If ease-of-setup is your top priority, I suspect SNES9x is the easiest one, except for having to download a shader pack separately.

My personal favorite CRT shader is shaders\shaders_slang\presets\crt-hyllian-sinc-smartblur-sgenpt.slangp . It gently improves the appearance of traditional pixel art without going out of its way to simulate the heavy artifacting of a real-world CRT

high accuracy, very easy to use (compared to ares & retroarch) + lots of useful features (compared to bsnes) but without crazy scope creep

you want retroarch, bsnes core, ares doesn’t let you prepend or append shaders, you don’t just want a crt shader you want to prepend a ntsc shader too. but if you’re playing a patched rom you’ll probably have to manually add it to a playlist

mesen allows me to engage in perverse fantasies like “disassembling bokosuka wars”

has anyone ever developed some sort of fan-devised single player game that can be played with maguc, pokemon, yu gi oh, or any other tcg cards ?

cross-system? surely yes, at least a topp trumps scenario. but I can’t think of any formal rules

I mean that would sorta emulate an actual match of the 2 player game, something like a single-player chess puzzle

like goldfishing a deck? technically a single-player game

the old Magic Duels game had trials which were basically ‘win in 3’ chess puzzles

does anyone know the game that matches this description:
(multiplayer?) indie space horror fps (graphics i don’t recall the fidelity of; not fancy) where the gimmick is that you can either have your torch or your gun out but not both, and so often you’re fighting alien bugs using just your extremely aggressive muzzle flash. the shadows are pitch black too and it looks crazy hectic.
it was featured in some yt vid about horror games maybe? this would’ve been years ago now tho. i’ve not been able to find anything about it since and it’s too deep in my history to search, but i think about it often.

I mean it’s a flashlight but that’s literally original release Doom 3 in design. Y’know, when it was interesting before they removed it’s literal central gameplay mechanic because nerds whined.

possibilitystorm.com has a big collection of Magic puzzles (you have to pay for the solutions tho), and Mark Rosewater republished the rules to his fabulously complicated solitaire variant on his tumblr.

I can vouch for the former being fun and the latter exceeding my mental capacity both now and in 1995.

highly aggressive muzzle flash sounds like space beast terror fright but your flashlight is not a separate weapon in that game
