Quick Questions XV: Episode Prompto

I use astro a40s and they can used on PC/PS3/4. I know I can get an adapter for XB. It’s pricey, but the audio is very good and I I’ve been told my mic is clear.

yeah it should definitely be said that the worst part of HyperX Clouds is the aesthetic.

it isn’t like gamer-awful but it’s also far from classy

they are very cheap + comfortable + audible though! I’m way better at siege with them and I had never ever before improved at a game with the purchase of audio equipment.

I just bought the Razer Blackshark V2 Pro ($150) last week. Its wireless is cross-platform by means of a non-Bluetooth USB DAC that comes with it, like the Cloud. It advertises extremely low latency (<1ms), and based on my testing compared to a wired setup, I indeed cannot notice any latency. I’m also pleased with the audio and mic quality. It’s fully black with no highlights.

I’m using it to play fighting games on my Windows PC and also doing work conference calls with a USB-C iPad Mini, but it’s mainly advertised for use with consoles.

I’ve tried a lot of the mainstream $300-400 ones from Bose and Sony and aside from being classier-looking and having active noise cancellation, it’s surprising how they seem pretty outclassed by the $150 gamer headset I just got. On the Pro Gamer side, the audio quality is the same, the comfort is the same, the mic quality is much better, and the wireless latency is also much better. Even more dramatically, compared to Jabra “call center” style headsets I’ve been using for work calls at the same ~$100 price range, the gamer stuff outclasses them so badly I’m almost surprised Jabra isn’t going out of business

I think it might be because gamers comparison shop by specs and price a lot more carefully than business users, so it’s forced the companies in that market to up their game.

This is also making me reconsider whether my next office chair ought to be a Gamer Chair

yeah, the Jabra stuff that you used to be able to get your employer to send you is tragically bad. I’m generally pretty happy using Airpod Pros with or without my Yeti for work calls, but my own unreasonable stipulation there is that I really prefer to only have headphone audio in one ear when I’m talking at length or I struggle to modulate my own volume, so my favourite work headset before Apple got my money was one of these things:

(they’re at least way better than horrible 2000s earpieces because those all used the ancient HFP Bluetooth profile, and these $2 things use regular A2DP)

In my experience when I’ve tried using airpods only in one ear, people more often complain I’m breaking up. It seems airpods rely on both sides for reliable mic pickup. So probably a good idea to use your Yeti yeah.

You live in probably the single best secondhand market for office furniture so consider a Gesture with a headrest before you get bolsters for all the Gs you’re fighting at your desk

yup, I use them with the Yeti on Windows (ie at my desk) when they’d otherwise be connecting over generic Bluetooth, and by themselves on Mac / iOS where they presumably have other private APIs

ridiculously overcomplicated flowchart but there you go

I was looking into this after you mentioned it and the only downside for me is the lack of active noise canceling. I love that about my bose headphones but the latency is aawwwfffullll on wireless. I love them for just listening to music but i have to use them wired for anything else.

…except the port for this is getting more busted over time so every little move causes crackling and disconnects.

Plus i hate wires.

Anyway I’m spoiled by ANC otherwise I’d get these right away.

if you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend getting a can of Deoxit for fussy audio connections

$12 and I started preaching

what happens if I inhale it

It improves the connections between your neurons and you become a savant. Your nerves are also improved so you can vividly experience every tiny vibration even from miles away

Just be wary of the “flushing action” if you don’t have a bathroom nearby

unfortunately as a result you have to start using active noise cancelling at the grocery store

Has anyone done some absurd bullshit to do cloud saves across devices for retroarch? If I can reasonably set this up between the laptop and the handheld(which can do this) I’d probably make a lot more progress in PS1 RPGs.

Try Retorarch on steam?

Yes – I keep my games and my saves on my network storage, then on each device I use symbolic links from the local folder.

For Retroarch, I sync:

  • /cores
  • /saves
  • /states
  • /system

I’ve spent way too much time, though, trying to get it to work on devices that ultimately wouldn’t. If you want to spend more time playing games, the cloud save integration on Steam should be much more usable.
