Quick Questions XV: Episode Prompto

What’s the deal with Star Ocean First Departure R? Is it supposed to be super difficult / grindy or am I just doing something wrong?
I’m around 12 hours in trying to get the kings emblem from Portmith, and the sudden difficulty spike is ridiculous. Any battle with purple wolves is a guaranteed game over. The overworld battles around the Van kingdom are giving me grief as well.
I assume i need to be crafting my own equipment but the RNG on skills makes it feel worthless trying.

I got a quick question for those who have some experience working for big companies in the game biz (I think Busted does, forget if there are others):

There are rumors that the AEW wrestling game has seen its theoretical release date missed a few times because they can’t get the ESRB rating they want, and I had assumed that most companies of good size likely had someone on staff whose responsibility involved keeping track on stuff in the game in terms of getting the rating they want. Is that not true, and is it possible/reasonable for a ratings issue to really delay a game by several months?

Here is the one screenshot released from the game showing blood, from the advertised lights out no DQ matchtype BTW.

I also like my head canon of Kenny Omega telling them to add more blood to make it more fitting while the team’s objections were ignored mainly because it is a humorous scenario.

it’s going to be an easy 3 count but on the second count the referee smashes their hand into the thumbtacks and can’t count to three because they are too busy wincing and showing everyone their hand

I’m redoing all my av stuff and I’m trying to decide what consoles to hook up to my oled tv through my receiver, which has hdmi, component, and composite. No idea how good the processing is on the analog inputs but I’ve already got them so I’m open to giving ‘em a try

Everything this gen and last gen is covered to my satisfaction

Everything up to the Saturn is covered by a mister, I’m fine with that

Which leaves N64, GC, Wii, Wii U (borderline don’t care), PS2, PS3, and DC. Xbox/360 as well I guess but BC on the XSX is fine for now.

I have a Wii, Wii U, slim PS2 with a swapkit and free mcboot, 60GB PS3, a slim PS3 of unknown history, and a DC that is awaiting installation of a GD-EMU.

I don’t have it set up yet but I will have a good PC hooked up eventually

Are any of those a particularly better or worse experience emulated vs real hardware? My understanding is that N64, PS2, GC, and Wii emulation is pretty much flawless now, any compatibility reservations? How’s PS3 and Dreamcast? If Wii U emulation is good that’s an easy one to drop. My wife hates the thing anyway after she spent so much time QA testing it.

I would really love to just set all this up and never touch any cables again which is why I’m trying to cover alll the bases now. Because my real problem with video games is that I haven’t had access to play them, surely… nah, I want to be able to play whatever but I don’t want to hoard devices anymore. I don’t want to get rid of something that has no replacement but anything redundant should go to someone who might actually use it.

you might want to keep the ps2 around, i’ve had some experiences where emulation has been a little bit fiddly - nothing outright broken, but some configuration can be required

Gamecube, Wii and Wii U emulation is fantastic. Though as Wii U consoles were One For One with the tablets, if you got the space I’d keep it around until time to sell. Gamecube and N64 stuff is at all time highs so money money money. But people have been emulating BotW Wii U on PC since release.

As someone sick in bed right now N64 emulation is perfectly fine. I am not messing with any settings on my 7yo laptop and outside of some weird shadows this vulkan backend is doing good.

Dreamcast emulation is better than the real thing in a lot of cases, widescreen upresed, non trash D-pad on whatever modern controller you use.

I recently mentioned there are too many options and settings in PS2 emulation but also it seems to work barring pressure sensitive actions in the 5 konami games that do that.

On this same old laptop I got Demon’s Souls and Scott Pilgrim Ps3 to work and went “lol that’s cool.”

I think OXbox stuff is also having a price spike right now so a good time to get rid of things. 360 stuff I’d wait another few years but we are definitely verging on Gears of War being worth 30 bucks for no reason.

Message me if you got any other questions about this sort of thing I think about a lot as my game collection sits in a closet.

Is looking at Craigslist still the best way to find a CRT? Any other tips for buying one? I’m not looking to min max the TV, I just would like a little 13" to put on my work desk so I can pull the NES I’ve had in storage for 10 years out and play it sometimes, and maybe eventually hook a MiSTer up to it if I ever get the guts to put one together.

The time I had a CRT I did put a “wanted” ad on Craigslist for it with some specific asks (size, brand, inputs) and basically said if you were throwing it away I’d take it

When a guy finally brought it to me after weeks of no hits, he asked for 50, he was like “well, I got you the exact one you wanted, take it or leave it” He was right, I talked him down to 35 though. It mysteriously came with the remote and manual in a plastic baggie in mint condition? Where did he get it from I wonder

can vampire: the masquerade: bloodlines be played with a controller by dumb console babies

I think some kind of steam big picture mode chicanery should be possible. There are only a handful of cases where you type in codes. Mouselook and hotkeys aren’t even important for the action since it’s more of a close combat deal.

Now that I’m online looking at things, I’m wondering how much of a headache it would be. I’ve never tried custom mapping a mouse to analog sticks and the conversation on here awhile back at how difficult it is for professional studios to get it right makes it seem like more trouble than it’s worth.

What are the best versions of each fatal frame game

Most of them are only on one console…? The Xbox versions are great, it’s how I played 2 anyway. Xbox games are almost always better than the PS2 version.

I’ve heard dreadful things about it but any preference for that rerelease of maiden of black water?

The Wii version is less a port than a new version of the game. It seems like a worse experience than the Xbox or PS2 versions.

I think the Xbox version of FF2 has a first person perspective mode. I don’t think there’s anything different in the Xbox version of FF1, so you might as well play Xbox for better grafx if you can. FF3 is PS2 only, and FF4 will come to modern platforms very soon. Maiden of Black Water is like on everything, but it looks really bad. I haven’t played FF4 yet but I suspect these games lose their identity after 3.
