Quick Questions XV: Episode Prompto

Cant help but think of the initial egg-with-feet state of your character in sonic dreams collection’s eggman origin (somehow forgot that no, those were the npcs and your character is sort of a hybrid of your custom sonic/Original Character and the lower half and behavior of a parent bird feeding the egg baby)

ah, that unlocked a part of my elementary school brain. i especially remember the lil computer guy in the bottom left. think we got those for reading books or something.

maybe this doesn’t count bc it is a game for children, but logical journey of the zoombinis had you make a bunch of ball/oval shaped buddies with different eyes, nose, and feet. it was great because you had to name each one of them a different name and none could look alike. then you’d save them from very hungry pizza monsters or bean dudes that would chase you around, etc. inevitably, you’d lose some of them and they wouldn’t get to live in the lil zoombini utopia at the end of it

If I ever lead a ragtag group of survivors to a paradise after an apocalypse you better believe I’m yelling ZOOMBINIVIIIIIILE when we crest that final ridge

Permadeath in an edutainment game stressed me out too much as a kid. I think this might actually be the thing that put me off it as a concept, looking back on it.

I’m pretty sure they just got kicked back to the last staging point? I remember the monumental achievement of us Beating Zoombinis after the combined efforts of me and my younger sister over the course of a year+ of our childhood and it involved getting doubles of every possible zoombini combini across the line

now here’s an obscure game with a massive roster!!!

are Sony OEM PS2 controllers actually pieces of garbage?

when i hooked up my PS2s again, i attempted to play some stuff and quickly found my controllers weren’t working. one of them now kind of works well if the cable isn’t bent a certain way, but i just ordered another official PS2 controller of eBay to replace the one i tossed, and…it doesn’t work.

like the analog button will turn on and the analog sticks work but the dpad and face buttons don’t work at all. but if i plug in the other kind-of functional controller, that one works.

at first maybe i thought “no way, it’s gotta be the controller ports, right?” but it can’t be because at least one PS2 controller works 80% of the time.

so yeah, is like two decades the lifespan of a PS2 controller?

i don’t really want to blame myself, because my apartment is literally full of electronics and furniture i’ve had since i was an actual child that are still working and in good condition, so…i feel like i can declare myself as a person who “takes care of their stuff”

yes and no

they aren’t prone to quick failure, but are definitely destined to a few particular issues over time ime

  1. stick material degradation - the grippy texture on the sticks wears down within a few months of heavy use and becomes slick and smooth, making fine movement much more difficult
  2. sticky shoulders - shoulder buttons have a tendency to stick (and eventually, fail to register) on the dualshock 2 - i reckon this mostly affects R1/L1
  3. mushy face buttons - the face buttons on the ds2 are analog, and so have more give. i describe them as “mushy”. over time, they get really sloppy, but it’s never particularly great

haven’t experienced the total failure it sounds like yours are having, though

do you think there’s a possibility it’s an internal issue with the PS2? i find this hard to believe because the controller isn’t working on either of my PS2s (i have both JP and NA PS2 slims), and it’s weird to me that they’d be broken in exactly the same way

so my only conclusion is that the cables are more sensitive/breakable than others

anecdotal but yeah sony controllers seem to disintegrate over time. i’ve had Weird Shit happen to them from DS 1-3 sticks turning gooey, button feel turning to mush after doing nothing but sitting in storage, and the analog rubber splitting and shearing off my pack-in ps4 controller

my ps4 controller has been fine since i got it in 2016

but i went through a bunch of ps1 controllers, every ps2 controller i’ve seen in the past decade or so has been caked in filth, and every ps3 controller looks like it’s been in a warzone.

Ah shoot, you’re probably right. I never could beat it! For some reason I remember them falling to their death in that stage with the glass and mirrors everywhere

Oh, they fall! They just can’t die

Zoombinis also made me think about “why don’t any living creatures have wheels” which introduced me to the concept I would now describe as body horror

fwiw, you can replace the cabling on PS2 controllers rather easily, it is just unplugging a tiny four-pin-connector (well, after you managed to open it w/o destroying the plastic case) and putting in place the new(er) cable?
might have been the accumulator-port of the ps3 DS I’m mixing it up with, but both are at least in my memory not a huge thing to fix.

be careful of the R2/L2 Buttons still working before re-assembling, i remember that being an obnoxious Problem requiring re-opening just for that a few times!

Forgive if this has been talked about before, but I just got a PS5 today and I’m wondering…

Is there any reason at all for me to keep my PS4?

Sony’s site says that there are only six (6) PS4 games that can’t be played on PS5, and I neither have nor am likely to have any of them. And my extra PS4 controller can even be used to play PS4 games on this behemoth.

I haven’t sold a piece of video game hardware since I traded my Game Boy Color in at a Gamestop for like $5 off a Game Boy Advance SP in 2003. But… what can I possibly do with this other than put another game machine in another bedroom?

i don’t know if you can hack a ps4 to turn it into a nice convenient emulation/ region free ps1&2/movie pirating machine, but it’s something i would look into before getting rid of it

one thing worth pointing out is that you can have a “home” ps4 and ps5, so if you’re moving to ps5 you can give that home ps4 to someone and it’ll still have access to your full digital library… pretty good situation if you’ve got a bud who would want that

It can act as a remote play device for your ps5, but the networking hardware is so awful this is only really tolerable over ethernet

You could also use it as a media streaming box but it’s loud as fuck and again the wifi performance is so bad that video will stutter

If you don’t have a second tv, then no, I don’t think there’s any reason to keep it around

If you got PT you can’t get it on the PS5.

That’s just about the only use case.
