Quick Questions XV: Episode Prompto

I appreciate it! If you’re interested, I’d reach out to the rest of the mod team – I’ve been progressively trying to minimize my role in the actual management of this place, and at this point I’m just doing the sysadminning at cost out of however they’re organizing community funds after years of floating it myself.

theyre like some of the best ps2 jrpgs. really following in the footsteps of koudelka with the first one its DISGUSTING looking because it’s clearly a late ps1 game on early ps2 which gives all the gross enemy designs a huge boost. the combat system is AMAZING, its one of those where theres a timing minigame that makes your attacks more effective, and the secondary mechanic that sort of functions as a battle time limit is done so well to induce stress. the music is amazing. its just got immaculate fucked up vibes. the games are also gay gay gay gay gay gay. i like dont even want to talk about a bunch of the characters because soem of that shit is just worth seeing. daphny knows WAY more about shadow hearts than me but its one of the best series anyones ever introduced me to…besides xenosaga :gswarm:

make sure you listen to a playlist of all the berserk music becuase you probably wont be going berserk a lot in the game, and its SOME OF THE BEST SONGS IN GAMES EVER

also every single move you do is a wheel that spins and you gotta get the line in the target area for a hit, or the even smaller area for a critical hit, you can get accessories to make your wheel spin slower and also items to make your target areas larger on the wheel, so you can adjust to your abilities

every NPC in the game is named (adjective) (name) so everyone you meet is named shit like Troubled Charlo, Hysteric Wisteria, Bored Ricky

also in the menu every enemy is modeled (like you were talking about the objects in disaster report jellicle) and have great descriptions so you can rotate them around and play spot-the-anus

the first one is mechanically lacking in the fights compared to the second adn third where every character has a wild battle changing gimmick. random battles though so if you’re allergic to that look out

the main characters name is yuri and i think one of his first lines to the other main character is pondering whether to bang her while she sleeps. yuri has so much nu-metal attitude. i always fix his name to yaoi but thats just me

they are my favorite ps2 jrpg series, maybe my favorite ever.

Theres a part in the like intro cutscene where yuri just reattaches his severed arm and makes the most like shithead anime protagonist face that is so painfully 2001 it rocks

From Koudelka to Shadow Hearts 3 each game is more refined but leans less into horror and more into……. JRPG comedy. So pick your game accordingly. (The music never stops ruling though) The horror never works because you’re just an overpowered JRPG guy beating people up in a turn based battle system but it’s fun. My fav is Shadow Hearts 1.

There’s something absolutely magical about visiting real world places and meeting like Rasputin and Mata Hari (a party member lmao) in a PS2 JRPG. SH1 both take place in Europe and Asia while SH3 takes place in America

I recall some very awful stereotypes in 2

i think the horror works really well in one because the game is BUTT UGLY in this HORRIFIC DISGUSTING WAY and it makes every enviroment and model creepy as hell

the more homo ive become the less homophobic the twincest merchants from shadow hearts become but VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED

weird that ppl are talking abt Shadow Hearts. my wife saw a copy of the first one in a retro game store up here and was like “what is this can we play it”

i remember making it to a sewer and then stopping, but i own the first two, so maybe it’s time to give them a shot again

It was an interesting experience watching someone play Shadow Hearts 2 and saying “I don’t get this Yuri guy, he’s a fun guy but why is he so goofy as he gets dragged around the world?” and then when he came back to the game after his daughter died his response changed to “Oh wow this is exactly what the nihilism of someone who has lost his will to live and is refusing to process it looks like. They nailed it.”

yuri gets his sense of humor from the rainbow demons who belittle and tease him in his goth mind palace graveyard

Thinking about it. Shadow Hearts 2´s narrative had some pretty wild tricks for a JRPG

  • it takes place after SH1’s bad ending, the good ending is non canon
  • The main character gets inflicted with a curse at the beginning, tries to find a cure, fails, just dies at the end from the curse. The end
  • Final boss is a minor NPC from the first game
  • Karen / Yuri uuuuh

Remembering this french import RPG magazine that had like 20 pages praising FFX and half a page on Shadow Hearts 1 telling « WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS GARBAGE WHEN FFX JUST CAME OUT!!! »
I got both and liked SH1 way more

in two you have a gay wrestler/body builder who can turn into a butterfly and gets new weapons by pulling huge objects out of the scenery in cutscenes. like ‘oh this telephone pole looks handy’ RRRRIP I just can’t stop thinking about shadow hearts!!! I can’t play super nintendo because my free TV doesn’t have an AV input but I have composite cables for my ps2 so I can DEFINITELY play shadowhearts

the worst part about shadowhearts is you can’t have all your favorite guys in your party at the same time
