okay cuz yeah the computers i had were way better specs than that but regardless of any tweaking i tried, i could never get games running decently. and my attempts to find answers were mostly met with finding a lot of really hostile condescending forum answers online that didn’t really answer anything anyway. like you had to disable cores of your computer or something because of the way the program worked, which… all my attempts to do so resulted in no improvements. so yeah i tried many things before finally just giving up and deciding it wasn’t worth it.
emulation communities are unfortunately often like this! I have tried to counter it when and where I can
Nothing immediate but there are dozens of songs along these lines.
Question for anyone who speaks german: spoilers for a chapter 1 puzzle in Return to Monkey Island
A puzzle involves needing to purchase an “apology frog” to write an apology on. This is an actual frog. Is this a german language pun that Ron Gilbert put in as an apology for the monkey wrench puzzle?
do dark souls and dsii have online populations on ps3? im not too interested in pvping… well maybe… i just want to see ghosts and messages and stuff. love playing demons souls online again it feels like idk… coming home
FWIW my rather ancient (i.e. having its 12th birthday this week) PC had no issue emulating PS2 games the time I tried and I’m a moron when it comes to emulation, so I guess it might literally come down to dumb luck re: the exact stuff you have in there.
that’s very strange because yeah… every time i tried it did not work well at all. i really tried with a fairly decent specced laptop i got 11 years ago and that’s when i tried every solution i could think of but the framerate was just not good enough for me to want to play through anything. that’s when i kept seeing all the stuff about needing to disable cores because it’s not optimized to use more than two cores or whatever. then tried again with another computer several years later with less good specs and it was even worse.
to be honestly i feel slightly like i’m being gaslit or something every time i’ve seen people say “PS2 emulation runs on virtually everything now” because that has never been my experience at all. like, sure, games ran. but way too choppy and slow to be acceptable. with this higher end range computer i got a year and a half ago is the first time it’s worked decently. and i mean i’m not exactly an emulation expert but i certainly tried all the obvious things.
PCSX2 on my old computer was a pain in the butt with weird performance issues more often than not and I always hated using it
i think pcsx2 emulation is a lot better since the new update and theyve dealt with a lot of the weird lags… i guess i would advise trying the new builds, keeping it autoupdated, and running it in software render mode.
I always figured that it was just done in the style of 70s tatsunoko cartoons, like Time Bokan and Yatterman, since the Bonne Family are inversed Doronjo gang.
as a native german speaker, i never came across such a saying … doesn’t mean that there isn’t one, of course.
Thought about idiosyncratic german language use of
frogs, and first thing that came to mind is
einen Frosch im Hals haben (literal translation: having a frog in your throat => having a lump in your throat).
Another usage is
sei kein Frosch (literal Translation: don’t be a frog => don’t be a wimp)
so depending on the Situation, it might be something inbetween?
Hope that helps!
could just be that different ps2 games have wildly different spec requirements?
like, i can run the original kingdom hearts on this weak laptop no problem.
meanwhile armored core 3 will slow down to a crawl, and sky odyssey runs fine only if nothing else is using the cpu.
there’s also speedhacks, internal rendering resolution, over/underclocking the EE/GS, software vs hardware rendering… etc. it’s easy to fuck up! and lunkheads on forums telling @ellaguro to fuck with their system scheduler are not helping
i think sotc is one of the most intensive games… it runs better in rpcs3 lol. but theres nothing idt pcsx2 cant play with default settings + software rendering. if you can’t do that it’s possible you just need a better cpu for it idk. could be wrong as hell here tho
I just tried to emulate a Steambot Chronicles undub a few weeks ago and also found myself having a lot of weird slowdown issues, but only in menus and certain scene transitions. Basic googling couldn’t come up with a solution in about 30 minutes so I left the experience feeling similar to ellaguro.
that may also just be steambot chronicles… those irem games are not exactly high performant engineering feats so much as held together with chewed gum + tape
I’m intrigued by people saying that the new monkey island is Actually Good but I’ve never played the rest, am I good just playing the first two then skipping or is it recommended to go through all of them (heard curse is ok)
I think the first three are all you should consider playing in prep for this one. Curse is great, my favorite.
