what is the current best way to play diablo II? when i played xanadu NEXT (one of the greatest games of all time), i saw a lot of people comparing that with diablo, which made me curious to try it out, since i never played any of those games.
i know there’s been a remaster/remake a couple years ago, but is it a case where they changed things in a way that lessens the experience?
yeah resurrected is your best bet unless you really want the full 800x600 experience, the quality of life stuff is great (controller support!) and it’s like the one remaster that imo actually nails the “this is what my brain was interpreting those pixels as” thing which usually doesn’t work for me
i’m not big on them continuing to make game balance updates (i’d at least prefer if the final version of retail diablo 2 was preserved as a separate mode or something) but they seem to just be making underpowered classes better? so far so good
Oh I missed an FF13 discussion. Everyone seemed to talk mostly about the mechanics (I luv u sb) but since it’s a final fantasy game I think it’s also worth talking about the story, because there’s a lot of it:
I would describe the plot as, I guess, rococo? Absolutely stuffed with nonsense proper nouns and little curlicues, suspended in a thick sticky web of melodrama that gets expressed via voice hyperacting. It’s a kind of aesthetic that certain people find sumptuous and delicious, like haute couture; but it’s insanely grating to a zen pulp loving cisman like me. I thought it was miserable. Everyone just shut up SHUT UP
this is funny to hear also bc the english dub feels very much like it belongs to the gas leak cinematic universe, everyone sounds really overmedicated and dazed in a way that meshes with the gauzy ethereality of its plot. the one thing i truly hate about ff13 is the overworld dialogue, but i forgive it because the vague corny meaningless filler that degenerates into mumbling as you move farther away really adds to that vibe.
I swear I’ve missed 80+% of the overworld dialogue so far as someone starts talking when I’m so far away and I either continuing running forward and get nothing, or stop and just hear some quiet mumbling. I hope none of it is important!
Anyone know of any video footage of the for Matching Service Dreamcast fighting games being played online back in the day? I’ve always been curious what that experience was like.
I don’t use readers enough–maybe I’ll have to now that Comixology is boned, and I don’t really have the dough for Marvel Unlimited–but CDisplay Ex seems to do everything I want: clicking on a download link from digitalcomicmuseum.com brings comics up in a gorgeous two-page display, and arrow keys page through. May have taken some tinkering with options to get it that way, I don’t remember.
I’m trying to shave down the backlog yet more, and I have the first 4 Oddworld games on Steam. I’m planning to play Stranger’s Wrath, but of the original trilogy, is there a “best” one to play? I’m perfectly willing to read plot synopses and skip to sequels if that’s where the best time is to be had.
Maybe there are fan patches or better out there but I tried the first on PC Win10 and it did not work right. Decided I’d just uninstall than try to get it to work.
I get the sneaking suspision that Stranger’s with the passage of time has become a novelty.
The only actual malware report I found on CDisplay EX was Free Automated Malware Analysis Service - powered by Falcon Sandbox - Viewing online file analysis results for 'CDisplayExWin64v1.10.33.exe' ; I checked a few of the things it reported–a modified registry entry and a suspicious dll–and did not find them on my system. I scanned my system with Malwarebytes and it came up clean. I uninstalled CDisplay EX, redownloaded it from the official site, scanned that download with Malwarebytes and Avast One, and it came up clean. I ran the freshly downloaded CDisplay EX installer, was not prompted to install any other programs, and scanned my system with both Malwarebytes and Avast One afterwards, and neither found anything.
I would also be mildly surprised if both Google and Firefox were directing me to a site that was an active malware source.
Update: There’s a recent discussion on the Discord about the current CDisplay EX installer being flagged by Windows Defender as containing the CandyOpen adware; they say it’s a false positive from an old issue: “It is a false positive but take it as you want to use it or not. It no longer has Open candy in it and hasn’t for years.”
Malwarebytes claims to be equipped to detect CandyOpen, but does not detect it in the current CDisplay EX installer; Microsoft is the only major security vendor flagging the installer: VirusTotal
