I really liked the Faxanadu-style one, Wonder Boy In Monster Land (a.k.a. Wonder Boy 2). The secret coins hidden everywhere and the invisible doors leading to secret shops and bosses were really satisfying. It’s sort of like an entire game around the SMB1 concept of random invisible blocks with 1up that you first hit by accident but then remember on your next playthrough.
I believe it is the second game re-branded, and a quick googling seems to back that up, so yes I think so.
I always bring this up, but the wonder boy series is so fucked up it spawned Adventure Island which plays nothing like the later wonder boy games. Or really Wonder Boy 1 for that matter.
And then Super Adventure Island 2 happens and it’s a wonderboy clone a and a damn good one too.
Wonder Boy’s multi-franchise fuckery is inspiring, TBH.
Then there’s the Brazilian versions of the Wonderboy games that were rebranded with a comic strip character who uses a toy rabbit instead of a sword. They look like ROM hacks but are totally legit.
What’s the best way to play Baroque?
Apparently, the PS2 (remake version) has worse soundtrack than Saturn and PSOne…
while the original version has more sluggish control…
Did I get it right?
unless you speak japanese then the only way to play is the ps2/wii remake, because the original has not been translated and the game focuses heavily on text/dialogue, both narratively and in gameplay. if you are emulating then the wii version is probably ideal because of the higher resolution, though otherwise the versions are the same. you also may want to consult a guide at some point if you are stuck, because progression is often (intentionally) opaque. play on normal mode.
I think the one truly fucked up thing is that they named the pc engine version of dragon’s trap just “adventure island”
i think any title that does not encourage you to read it as ‘the dragon strap’ is probably an improvement
Wonder Boy and the Bad Dragon’s Trap
the wonderboy with the dragon strap
Just a pro tip for any new Wii / PS2 Baroque player: playing in 1st person is way different as you can move and attack at the same time (just like in the original or a King’s Field) while 3rd person is more of a standard ARPG with your character locked in place during attacks
Total game changer and absolutely not obvious
what’s the best ps1/ps2 to pc controller adapter?
bonus question: best version of persona 2: innocent sin? (will be emulating either)
Just play the PSP version. The fan translation for the PSX version isn’t anything to write home about.
my vote is for the psx version but i’m a purist nerd and also really love the fan translation localizing teens calling kasugayama high school “kuso-gayama” as “kasu-gay-ama”
I’m also a purist, but I really didn’t like the IS fan translation. There’s not too many downsides to the PSP version, you also have the option of OG and arranged sountracks, slightly bigger bust portraits, et cetera. Also, if I recall correctly, Atlus USA finally romanized “In Lak’ech” correctly (in EP, they had it as like, “In Laqetti” or something) in IS:PSP. There’s some censorship, though – they gave Hitler shades in the PSP version (JP version, too). But, the visage of Hitler in sunglasses is pretty hilarious, so I think that’s a point for the PSP version.
yeah I’m in favor of the PSP version
A new one. I had two that just didn’t work on Win10 and their website dissappeared.
I remember when playing through PS1 IS that I realized that I wasn’t able follow the plot well so I looked up some scenes on Youtube to rewatch them and it was amazing how much clear everything became when watching the PSP scenes. Innocent Sin is also the sort of game where it’s a plot point that several character have almost identical names to each other save for a single letter which certainly doesn’t help.
Did they do any dubbing to the battle shouts and the handful dialogue voice lines in the game?
Yeah, it has English voices.
