See I think something like this is a pretty good compromise, I can’t think of too many games where you need to use both the D-Pad and the analog stick at the same time. I can barely think of any games where the left prong (and by extension the D-Pad and left shoulder button) were used outside of duplicating inputs from the stick/Z trigger.
n64 mini should come with my SUPER PAD n64 controller that has the button layout and shape of an almost human controller and feeels sooo good in my hands that i cant use anything else again to play n64 games. im speedrunner good at mario kart and its because of this controller
Kirby 64 ONLY uses the D-pad, infuriatingly.
I think the VB controller is actually a premonition of future Nintendo designs. The “two d-pad” and “totally symmetrical” design looks basically like an N64 controller without the middle prong (if you assume the c buttons are like a janky d-pad) and the DS is basically the same minus an analog stick.
Anyway
It kind of blew my mind when it was pointed out that it almost looks like the Wii Nunchuk was made from the same factory mould that was used for the middle prong of the N64 controller.
I do want to click that Z-button again some day. For all its faults that was still an excellent button.
I dunno, if I was going to use a third party controller I’d just emulate on my computer. An enormous part of the appeal of these Minis is coming as close to how it felt playing the systems back in the day with the controllers being as 1:1 as possible.
The idea of a USB Nintendo 64 controller made by Nintendo with a stick that was equally sensitive but won’t break in ten seconds would be lovely. Probably more worthwhile to me than another emulator box, actually. The console is such an oddball it’s hard to get a controller that works in the weird ways it needs to work.
anyone getting this fairly often on youtube the last couple of weeks? if i refresh or just hold a few seconds videos load, as if it’s fighting with ublock to load an ad or something
its true!! i am! and i use a controller to make me better!! and i love eating up everyones suffering as they try to power through with a ‘real’ n64 controller
such a good fucking controller. the one i had since i bought my n64 lost the joypad’s nub, but i found a replacement and i cant wait to do the ridiculous code in shadows of the empire with it hmph hmph
(just wanted to change “super pad” to “super bad” this is indeed a huge improvement over the rollicking rimshot clownshow that is the standard N64 controller)
i love it and want it on my actual pad now
Yep that’s absolutely what’s happening.
I’m increasingly coming to think that I should get a single Ultra-Wide monitor (like, 34") rather than my current two-monitor setup – I feel like the multi-monitor setup prevents me from really focusing on any one particular thing (playing games, mostly) when that’s really when I want to be using my home PC for – has anybody made this transition themselves or has uw monitors to recommend?
I don’t have an UW monitor but I can say that, on my home PC, I physically turn off my second monitor unless I’m streaming or editing, so yeah having one monitor is super workable. Especially at 4K, you can fit quite a few layered windows and see them all.
Isn’t an ultrawide really awkwardly shaped for gaming?
I’m not sure what you mean?
It’s just so wide! I don’t know exactly where my bias comes from, but I just have a hard time getting away from 16:9 resolution. I’d do 4k before UW for gaming, but I also have a hard time with my 16:10 monitor, so…
I watched a speedrun of Final Fantasy VIII, a game I’d never played nor knew anything about, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I love how absolutely batshit the storyline to these earlier Square games got.
That said, I have zero desire to slog through the tedium of some of the older JRPG systems. I’m in the process of trying to get through Skies of Aracadia and random encounters are making it rougher than I’d hoped. I’ve kept away from Dragon Quest games in the past due to the grind and the so-so environments, and couldn’t make it to Act III in Bravely Default for the same reasons.
I’d love to play through something with the density of story and variety of environments of a FF game, but without the tedium of the battles. Any suggestions?
let me tell you about the Gameshark
I dunno how much this helps, but Skies of Arcadia is significantly sloggier than most FF games. And vastly, vastly moreso than most Dragon Quest games.
Also the grind in Dragon Quest, especially in the ports on the DS onwards, is kind of overstated. And even the Grindy ones have combat that moves along at a really fast clip.
