Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

Yeah Zero should be fine on PC.

I do wonder why they haven’t ported 6 yet, as Kiwami 2 and 7 are both in the same engine.

What’s a good engine / framework for android game prototyping and/or development?

I’m gonna say Unity but that’s a bit predictable at this point

I don’t have a PS4 so I can’t talk about that. Zero on PC is great though. I don’t know that the old wisdom of Japanese PC ports still holds up either, with all the new engines they developed + Unreal Engine 4 being so ubiquitous

maybe that old wisdom half holds up since zero started out as a pretty bad port until they fixed it with a patch

Haha well, I didn’t know that, okay then!

Always good to be careful

I dunno I kinda lost interest before any details of the plot were clear.

I forgot I’d even started it before reading this post in fact.

I got most of the way through and saw no indication of any such thing

yeah I mean I got burned trying to play RE6 on PC and that doesn’t feel like ~that~ long ago. I feel like capcom has upped their PC port game since then but idk what to expect from sega in that regard.

i’ve not had too much trouble with japanese pc ports in the last four years besides maybe a couple of things clearly taxing a 1060 a bit more than you’d expect and nier automata requiring a mod

oh yeah massively, re:engine stuff runs beautifully

What kind of 3D Mario is sackboy cloning? The reviews all just say it’s pretty good, but is it like super simple or is there complex platforming or what?

I only played the first level but the isometric perspective is probably the main thing that reminds people of 3D Mario. It doesn’t play like classic LBP so Sumo is just using the franchise to make a new platformer of their own design. You’ve got punching and yoshi jumps and picking stuff up and throwing it. That first level was actually pretty solid; simple, but a nice start. It has a cozy and charming atmosphere and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it.

Sackboy having a voice with which they make grunts and exertions will probably never stop weirding me out though.

The last console I bought was a 360. Anything as good as Kane Lynch 2 and Max Payne 3 been released?

What is the point of further video games in light of this.

Been kinda wondering that myself

It’s funny, I keep being ready to come back and confirm Sackboy is a light platformer but then I’ll come across a particular section of more challenging platforming. Like I just hit this section of some underwater themed level. It’s so cute! I love how the school of fish move and make the platforms. And then you’ve got a time limit to get all the collectables while dealing with the moving fish and the crabs, making me panic and die. (Ignore the silencing of the sound in the last 4 seconds. That’s when I opened the console UI to save the video.)

So I think it has some more Mario-like platforming sprinkled in but overall I feel like it has the soul of one of those collectathon platformers, like Spyro or Banjo Kazooie. The level designs and mechanics varied and it’s constantly making you do new things but none of it is particularly challenging. It’s more taking pleasant strolls through pretty places, moving to a nice rhythm, and finding where you need to jump to find some of the collectable mcguffins that exist in every level, often time’s going “d’oh, that was how you were supposed get there” after you miss your opportunity.

So I think it’s a really pleasant game, but not really even Mario challenging.

Also apparently Sony shelled out for licensed music. The game has the soft-pop musical sensibility of the LBP franchise but one of the stage BGMs was (a game modified version of) Uptown Funk, with the following stage being a nice instrumental rendition of Move Your Feet. The BGM instrumentations are way more involved than I was expecting from the game.
