Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

Hell yeah, please post impressions.

is anyone playing the baldur’s gate 3 early access? is there a thread of it i’m missing? i thought it would be big news around here. i don’t have a computer that can play it but i’m curious about how it’s going so far

I was pretty unimpressed! it really felt like they grafted D&D onto the original sin formula and broke everything about what made it work; they lost both the terry pratchett nonsense tone and the tightness and immediacy of the combat

refunded after 3 hours, ty steam, will check back in next year

oh sad! do you think it can be fixed? i mean the writing stuff probably not, but maybe they can at least make the combat better? what a bummer

I don’t have super high hopes based on what I saw, it really seems like a regression in approach, but we’ll see

On the one hand, Felix’s opinions on crpgs are Extremely Bizarre and should be taken as a barometer for no one

On the other hand, never play a game in early access

Counterpoint to ā€œnever play a game in early accessā€ is Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, an awesome Quake 1-inspired throwback FPS developed on the DarkPlaces sourceport whose early access version is essentially episode 1 of 3 a la the old shareware model.

Me and my buddy have played a few hours of it together and we fucking love it. I’m not going to say our experience is universal or that it’s already a Great RPG but can you have fun with it? Fuck yeah you can

There’s obviously a ton of work to be done but if you have fond memories of baldurs gate and like the divinity engine it holds a lot promise. Our main goal is always to do dumb shit in combat and wow how perfect. The divinity engine lets you easily do a bunch of stuff that’s cool but way too tedious to do at the table, and all the environmental/elemental stuff makes sure combat way more interesting than the infinity engine games.

I don’t care about baldurs gate the city or forgotten realms at all but there’s a very strong chance this turns into a spelljammer campaign which is easily, easily the most fun d&d setting. Fantasy space flight? Sign me uuuup

It’s basically a game made for us two nerds and I don’t care how well it stacks up against pillars of eternity 2: didn’t get very far because these games are at their best with a bud on the same wavelength as you

I continue to be the weirdest CRPG fan, who dislikes CRPGs proportionally to how much RPG nerds like them

I uh I’m not doing it on purpose

I think we just have different criteria for what makes an RPG good and that’s okay? I wouldn’t even call myself an RPG nerd because I don’t actually play very many of them and have never finished a western style rpg in my life

no, of course it is, I’m just always amused that this genre I nominally like actually regularly produces stuff I that enjoy at all, given how much my tastes run opposite to the people who theoretically have more claim to it than I do!

I am very excited how BG3 is committing to expecting you to fail 50-75% of rolls, and just keep going. Its refreshing after New Vegas’ fix to save scumming to just let you know you know you’re going to succeed.

As long as we can all agree that Outer Worlds is boring as shit

Mostly, but for one or two endearing companions and their little sub-plots

Is this supposed to be the skeletal corpse of the King of Hyrule?

Yes. Compare that to the ending:

Huh, I guess that’s pretty definite then. I always just assumed it was the wizard Agahnim from the green robes chilling on the throne wearing the crown.

so, certain key members of my extended family have decided that a global pandemic is a great time to plan a large-scale family reunion. Is there anything I can do about this to get it shut down, and maybe get some of them arrested in the process, fingers crossed?

send a bunch of male strippers in gender reveal party outfits holding signs that say ā€œANTIFA PROAERITHā€ and then call the police about this loud and lewd party going on ā€œnext doorā€.
