The problem with buying a MacBook is that they all come with macos which has been getting drastically worse with every release

I wish I could disagree, but, /shrugs from the last version of macOS which supported 32-bit apps

Unfortunately I have yet to find an alternative OS which is anywhere near as usable to me, even in macOS’ current slowly-rotting state

if you haven’t tested this in a while i’d recommend trying it out. depending on your internet, the delays on twitch can be sub 1 second, generally sub 5 which is workable.

I predict the first-generation ARM Macbook on the contrary will be shitty in several weird unexpected ways and the tone of the reviews will be ā€œpromising, but wait for the next oneā€. You have a lot of faith in paper benchmarks that never compared apples to apples at any point before, and a lot of confidence that Apple’s hardware people are supremely competent and Intel supremely incompetent.

Like there’s some truth to your narrative, but surely Apple is right now macheting their way through a jungle of legacy as they adapt the SoC for a power envelope and use cases it was never exposed to before.

only apple product I’ve ever purchased was an ipod shuffle and that alone was enough to put me off forever, I will never darken their towels again

I think I’ll request you cut us some slack for having a bit of hope and/or faith (cult cult cult) given that our other path forward is that as of 2021 we have to move to uhhh, Linux on Thinkpads I guess, or to Windows: Suggested Offers in the Start Menu Edition

honestly, the first-gen Intel Macbook was great, and they already have a massive thermal margin to work with if you look at the A14X projections, so I have a hard time imagining how they could screw up

VideoToolbox still exists??? (I’m pretty sure it doesn’t anymore but you should be using AVFoundation)

This is the real tragedy of Microsoft shutting down Mixer. The low latency streaming (if set up correctly) was imperceptible (e.g. equal to the latency of voice chat).

In my experience it’s both significantly worse and more fiddly on Twitch.

Yeah it’s still there, none of it is deprecated, and AFAICT AVFoundation doesn’t give you the same access to hardware encoding anyway. Plus it’s more friendly of a C api than an ObjC/Swift API.

I was thinking of QTKit! My bad.

Will you people please confine this meaningless technobabble to the hardware thread where it can be safely quarantined

sounds like we need a new QUICK QUESTIONS thread

In the US, is a company that defines its workers as contractors legally allowed to prohibit said contractors from subcontracting?

Uhh depends on the contract

Trying to remember a movie I saw in like 2014 with a friend while we were both deleriously high, in which it’s like a crime movie, but the entire movie is played straight as a student film made by high schoolers.

I can’t remember much but either it was the kind of thing where parents interrupted the movie in-progress, as like a meta thing, or it was played completely straight but with ameturish sets, high school actors, etc, a la Home Movies.

Only thing I can remember is that it was styled like a Scorsese type of movie, and involved the parents’ basement where the crime boss (their son) operated out of.
