archer c7 is like the only router anyone should buy though

it’s the new wndr3700 which was the new wrt54g

in general routers aren’t a terrible market to have to wade through, but the airport certainly had a UI advantage

the airports were/are super reliable, i only replaced my 2007 .n model last year when it was really showing its age performance wise
between that, the form factor, not having to install lede & airport utility stealing focus to tell you about problems i’d still be recommending them to friends

did you see that linksys are still selling plenty of wrt54g

yeah I know a few middle aged academics who are going to be aghast (if they aren’t already) at not being able to buy exclusively apple hardware for all of their consumer technology, tbh I assumed people with that kind of brand loyalty and disposable income would be valuable to apple’s bottom line forever so this is a baffling move to me

the margins on that stuff weren’t particularly bad (which is why I never bought them) and it’s not like they couldn’t just continue to rebadge other components with their own UIs on top like they were already doing

I guess those people were relatively unlikely to ever upgrade their routers or monitors other than with gear provided by their ISPs or employers but still

and for what it’s worth I attribute continued wrt54g popularity to the same thing as continued linux mint popularity, a lot of people’s idea of the secret good thing that you only know about by word of mouth is actually a decade out of date but the feelings of expertise associated with knowing how to work with [thing you don’t necessarily understand] die hard, especially so when they have any resemblance to winXP-era computing paradigms

my wndr3700 even had ddwrt support back when I bought it in 2009 iirc and I haven’t had to replace the firmware on my c7 because it’s not missing any features I need

It’s more that a lot of people’s internet connections aren’t getting any faster and they never do file transfers on LAN, so there is no reason to research a newer router.

yeah, I suppose that’s true. I’m always struck by the huge difference between “10mbps with an ISP router” and “30mbps with a good router” when I visit my in-laws

I know the answer’s probably no, but are there any decent third party controllers for the pstrois? The official ones are so danged expensive.

My first one that came with a now-defunct machine has a busted R2 trigger (I blame demons/dark 1 for this), and my second that came with my current triple just…died a year after I got it.

I got a cheap knockoff on a whim a few years ago but that POS never even worked right.

Gotta get a functional one before P5 comes in the mail.

the PS3 (not so much the 4) is really generous with USB controllers, it’ll even take DS1/2’s with Chinese dongles

Thanks!

Iirc I tried the wired 360 controller once and the console was like “hahaha NO”.

Yeah, the trick is that it has to be a USB HID controller (which the 360 controller is not).

Hey guys thanks for the knowledge. Turns out I have a dongle that lets me use a Wii classic controller with the trois. Worked just fine with Afterburner Climax, if a tad slippery feeling, so it’ll more than suffice for a game requiring less precise control i.e. P5.

You still need a router, but if you want good wifi these are basically unbeatable: https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-802-11ac-Dual-Radio-UAP-AC-PRO-US/dp/B015PRO512/

Initial setup is a little bit of a pain, but after that all your wifi problems just… go away.
